KEEPING the young people of Barnsley on the straight and narrow is one of Barnsley Sea Cadet's aims.

The group, which uses a nautical theme based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy, has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

The Sea Cadets has been nominated as 'community group' of the year by commanding officer Caroline Devonport and Andy Ingham, who is the parent of one of the members.

It was September 1942 when the Barnsley unit opened its doors for the first time on Summer Lane and one of the first recruits was a young lad called Bernard Price.

Today, the unit is run from Racecommon Road and maintains its status as a registered charity - holding fundraising activities and by applying for grants.
