AN AWARD winning voluntary project which provides support to some of Barnsley’s most needy has been saved from closure.

The Romero Support and Guidance Centre based at St Helen’s Church in Athersley, faced closure due to a funding crisis.

But this week volunteers and users of the centre were celebrating after receiving news that funding has been found to keep it open - at least for the time being.

Caroline Parker, who has worked on the project since it started, said a grant had been given from the Coalfields Regeneration Fund.

She said: “After the worst funding crisis in our history, we are delighted to announce that we have received grants to take us forward for a further year.”
