A RESPECTED gardener and grower of chrysanthemums has died.

Terry Wombell died aged 84 on January 4 in Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.

A very active member of Elsecar, Hoyland and District Chrysanthemum Society, Terry would regularly update the Chronicle on the society’s activities. Terry was known throughout the borough for his gardening and growing, maintaining an allotment at the rear of his home in Church Street, Elsecar. He was also respected nationally for his expertise on chrysanthemums, judging and exhibiting with the National Chrysanthemum Society and winning countless awards.

Daughter Tina said: “Chrysanthemums had been his passion for over 55 years and he was well known and respected in this field locally, regionally and nationally.

“As quoted by one of Terry’s chrysanthemum grower friends, he was ‘a great ‘Chrysanth’ man and an even better bloke’.

“Terry will sadly missed by all who knew him.”

Terry leaves a wife of 61 years, June, daughters Tina and Ros, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are by Hammertons 283753. The funeral service will take place at Barnsley Crematorium on Tuesday at 12.10pm and afterwards at the Crown Inn, Elsecar.
