SOUTH Yorkshire Police are facing an early backlash over plans to reintroduce neighbourhood police with a system that would leave Penistone’s station unoccupied and officers tasked to work in the area operating from Kendray.

Details of the proposals have been widely circulated among the communities which would be affected by the changes although officially the force say the process is ‘still very much ongoing and there is some detailed work to be done before specific proposals are put in place’.

Thurgoland Parish Council is now to write to South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings, to highlight their concern that no officers will be based at Penistone.

The new chief constable, Stephen Watson, will also be copied in on the letter.
