A NEW learning service run by a bakers’ trade union from the NUM headquarters in Barnsley opened its doors yesterday.
The Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) Learning Services transferred its services from Pudsey to Barnsley, renting rooms in the NUM building on Victoria Road.
The service provides learning courses in a wide range of subjects and aims to encourage people who wouldn’t have access to education to learn a new skill or profession.
Lisa Greenfield, project manager, said: “We are government funded through the Department of Education and Union Learn. We are designed to provide services for people who wouldn’t get seen by education, we can give them information, facts, and guidance to help them to retrain or learn something new.
“We can help to educate people and get them back into employment and help them with the confidence to get back into learning.
“Previously our communications centre was in Pudsey and we were part of the Labour centre there but the access was pretty poor and when there was an opportunity to move into the NUM building we jumped at the chance.
“We’ve decorated the place and made it a really good hub for encouraging learning.”
