A BRASS band’s members are celebrating after winning a national competition.

Barnsley Brass triumphed in the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain (third section) final last weekend, winning the coveted trophy and £1,000.

Britain’s best brass bands, all of which were regional champions or runners up earlier this year, contested the title at The Centaur, Cheltenham at the weekend.

Spokesman Graham Mallory said: “The three judges agreed Barnsley Brass were the clear winners with a great musical performance comprising a show of class and excellent playing.

“A huge congratulations also goes to Barry Clegg, our solo euphonium, for also winning the soloist prize, and also to our musical director William Rushworth for his fantastic reading of the piece, hard work and patience with the band.”

Hoyland-based Strata Brass competed in the first section of the national final, but finished 17th out of 17.
