PENISTONE police officer PC Andy Thompson has said he doesn’t expect future bank holidays in Penistone to turn into brawls like the last one.

Up to 30 people were involved in the fight along High Street at about 1am on spring bank holiday on Monday, May 29.

Penistone officers had to call for back up from Barnsley and Wombwell and it wasn’t until eight police cars, two dog units and a riot van arrived that order was restored.

Seven people arrested at the time have since been listed on Pub Watch and banned permanently from Penistone pubs.

Members of Penistone’s recently formed crime and safety sub-group had been concerned it wasn’t an isolated incident but PC Thompson is confident it won’t happen again.

He said: “It was a one off incident whereby several local workmen were causing problems in the pubs. “Some people took exception and it ended in a fracas which was dealt with appropriately by the police.”
