Barnsley drew 1-1 at home to high-flying Swansea City in the first game following the departure of Daniel Stendel.

The visitors took the lead midway through the second half but Alex Mowatt levelled three minutes later. Both sides had several clear-cut chances in what was, overall, an even and entertaining contest.

The Reds are now bottom of the Championship, three points adrift of safety, while they have not won in their last 11 league matches.

Caretaker Adam Murray made three changes from the side that lost 5-1 at Preston North End before the international break. Full-backs Jordan and Ben Williams dropped out of the team, with Jordan omitted from the squad, while captain Mike Bahre was benched. Into the side side came Bambo Diaby and Kenny Dougall, who both returned from injury, as well as recalled right-back Dimitri Cavare. Youngsters Clarke Oduor and Elliot Simoes were on the bench. The hosts used a 3-5-2 formation with Cavare and Brown as right and left wing-backs.

Following a minute’s applause before the kick-off for Jeffrey Wroe, the fan who died after a heart attack during the last home game, Barnsley had the better of the first half but were not able to take any of the chances they created.

The hosts almost took the lead in the first minute when a long throw was helped towards goal by a Woodrow volley and the ball was almost spilled over the line by goalkeeper Freddie Woodman but he gathered it.

The Reds missed a big chance in the ninth minute when, after good work on the left wing, Woodrow’s shot from just outside the box was straight at Woodman but he fumbled it to Cameron McGeehan who blazed over eight yards out. Mowatt then headed over a Cavare cross when eight yards out.

After struggling in the opening quarter of an hour, Swansea began to show glimpses of their traditional flowing football with excellent work by George Byers leading to Andre Ayew shooting from the edge of the box but his weak effort was easily gathered by Brad Collins.

McGeehan came close again when his shot from just outside the box trickled wide of the bottom left corner after Conor Chaplin nudged the ball to him following a good run down the right by Cavare.  At the end other, Byers outmuscled Dougall but his shot from 25 yards was weak and easily saved. McGeehan then headed over from close range when surrounded by defenders after Chaplin crossed from the right wing.

Swansea had the first chance of the second half when a left-wing cross ricocheted to Ayew who had only Collins to beat at a tight angle five yards out but the goalkeeper blocked well with his chest.

McGeehan then missed an even better chance than his first half opportunity when, after a right-wing Chaplin cross fell to him eight yards out with the goal gaping, he scooped it over the bar.

The Swans then should have taken the lead in the 61st minute when Sam Surridge went clean through on goal after a fine Matt Grimes pass but Collins made an excellent one-on-one save with his left foot. Collins then produced another superb stop to deny Bersant Celina’s header at the back post after Ayew ran down the right of the Barnsley box and lofted up a good cross.

The opening goal came after 67 minutes following a real scramble. After Celina skipped past Diaby in the box, his shot was impressively pushed up into the air by Collins then Ayew’s header was cleared off the line by Aapo Halme before Ayew’s next effort crossed the line.

The Reds levelled two minutes later when Chaplin ran down the right of the box and fired in a low cross which was met 12 yards out by Mowatt who found the bottom left corner for his first goal of the season and his first in the Championship at Oakwell.

Ayew then glanced a header over from a Grimes free-kick while both Woodrow and Mowatt shot narrowly over the bar from outside the box. Another 25-yard Woodrow cross then forced Woodman to dive full-length to his left and push it away in the 89th minute.

Barnsley almost lost the game in injury-time when Halme nearly headed past Collins just outside the box but the goalkeeper, who had rushed out of his area to meet a long ball, blocked well with his foot.

Barnsley will be managed today by caretaker Adam Murray, following the departure of head coach Daniel Stendel last week.
  • 14:23pm
Murray, whose last management role was with sixth-tier Boston, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for me, even if it’s for just three days or a week. Even though I have done quite a lot at a young age, I still class myself as a young coach so anything I can learn is really good. I have learned a lot already, working in the Championship and working with Daniel. At the start of last week, this (being made caretaker) was the last thing on my mind. It has been a whirlwind.”
  • 14:28pm

He added: “Do we expect to see 100 per cent improvement on Saturday? Obviously not, because that’s not the way the game works, but we want to see some improvement. It’s made it smoother that I know the players and I have been analysing them all season so I know the little bits we need to improve.”
  • 14:29pm

This is Barnsley’s only Saturday home game in a 77-day spell between the 3-1 loss to Luton Town in August and the fixture with Stoke City on November 9.
  • 14:29pm

Barnsley could fall to the bottom of the Championship table today if Stoke City better their result.
  • 14:32pm

The Reds are currently winless in ten league matches which is their longest such run since the end of 2017 under Paul Heckingbottom.
  • 14:34pm

Should they fail to beat Swansea tomorrow, the run will be the longest since late 2012 under Keith Hill while, if it stretches beyond Tuesday’s trip to West Bromwich Albion, it will be the worst since 1971.
  • 14:41pm

Murray said: “A win would do everybody the world of good but the biggest thing is the process. That can be frustrating but we need a little bit of patience... We just want to put a little bit more organisation into the amazing work that has gone on in the last 18 months.”
  • 14:41pm

Barnsley fans have expressed frustration with the club’s handling of Daniel Stendel’s departure last week. Caretaker Murray said: “We’re all realistic. We understand that supporters will be frustrated when you are not winning games. My message would be: show the incredible support you can show to the players from the first minute to the last.”
  • 14:42pm
Murray added: “Getting the fans behind us is more important than any tactical plan, especially being at home. I have seen the power these supporters have and the noise they make. We will need that for 90 minutes on Saturday. There might be a mistake or a bad pass but we need the support from the stands for 90 minutes.”
  • 14:45pm
Midfielder Alex Mowatt admitted last week was among the worst of his career but says the players are now focused on what Murray is telling them rather than thinking about who will be appointed in the long-term. He said: ““We don’t think too much about the future, we just have to play for the manager who is in charge at the time, which is Muz.”
  • 14:47pm

The Reds have collected just two points from their last five home games, but secured a last-minute draw with Derby County in their most recent Oakwell fixture to end a three-match losing run there. That follows a 29-game unbeaten run at Oakwell in the league which lasted 17 months and was the best sequence since the 1930s.
  • 14:50pm

Swansea were relegated last year after a seven-season spell in the Premier League then finished tenth under the management of Graham Potter who was poached by top flight Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer.
  • 14:54pm
They also lost top-scorer Oliver McBurnie, who had previously impressed on loan to Barnsley, to Sheffield United for £17million and winger Daniel James to Manchester United for £15million.
  • 14:54pm

Very little of that money has been reinvested back into the playing squad as the club has been riddled with significant debts while reports this week have suggested that the American owners would be willing to sell.
  • 14:54pm

They gave a first club manager’s position to Welshman Steve Cooper who, in four years as England under 17s boss, had worked with Barnsley right-back Jordan Williams then later led a team containing Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden to win the World Cup in 2017.
  • 14:54pm

Cooper made an excellent start as the Swans’ seven wins and one draw in all competitions in August left them top of the Championship with 16 points from a possible 18. But their form after the first international break was less impressive as they collected five points from as many games. They were still top until losing at home to bottom club Stoke City in the final game before the second international break, which saw them drop to fourth.
  • 14:54pm

The Swans are unbeaten away from home this season in the league, with wins at QPR, Leeds and Charlton as well as goalless draws at Derby County and Bristol City. They have only conceded two goals from their five away games, which is the best away defensive record in the EFL while only Premier League leaders Liverpool have an equal record in the top five English divisions.
  • 14:55pm
Murray said: “They are a very good team. They are not in their position by being a poor team. The manager has done fantastically, going from international football to club football. He’s got them playing a good brand and style of football. Our focus is on us but we’ll be aware of their strengths and weaknesses.”
  • 14:55pm

This will be Barnsley’s first game against Swansea in more than seven years. The clubs have met 72 times, with the Reds winning 24 and City 35. Swansea are unbeaten in five trips to Oakwell across 36 years.
  • 14:57pm
Barnsley’s League One play-off final penalty shoot-out win over Swansea in 2006 – in which first team coach Dale Tonge played along with academy coaches Bobby Hassell and Martin Devaney – was the only time they have beaten the Welsh club in 12 meetings since 1983.
  • 14:57pm

After the play-off final win, the two clubs have met on eight occasions with Barnsley losing five and drawing three. The last league fixture was a 1-1 draw in Barnsley in January 2011 when a Swansea side on their way to the Premier League needed an 86th-minute penalty after Hassell had opened the scoring.
  • 14:58pm

The clubs met twice in 2012 as Swansea won 4-2 at Oakwell in the FA Cup, despite a Ricardo Vaz Te brace, then 3-1 in Wales in the League Cup with Hassell again scoring for the Reds.
  • 15:06pm

A period of silence turns into a period of applause for Jeffrey Wroe, the 66-year-old fan who lost his life at the Reds' game against Derby County. Barnsley kick off and immediately get a chance as Bambo Diaby's long throw is turned on by Cauley Woodrow. Woodman held it, but it was very close to going over the line.
  • 15:07pm

2 Another long throw from Dimitri Cavare is challenged for by Bambo Diaby and barely dealt with by Swansea's defence. Cauley Woodrow is then called for offside as he's slipped into the box.
  • 15:08pm

4 Cauley Woodrow forces a corner on the right side as his cross is deflected out. Bright start from the home side.
  • 15:10pm

5 A long shot from Jacob Brown rolls wide of the far post, as he collected a cross-field ball and switched onto his right foot.
  • 15:13pm

9 Cameron McGeehan really should've put that away. Mike van der Hoorn fails to deal with a long throw from Jacob Brown, which allows Cauley Woodrow to cut inside from the left and fire a low shot straight at the keeper. He parried it back out, and the midfielder ballooned the ball over from a relatively tight angle.
  • 15:17pm

11 Another slick move for Barnsley starts on the left with Jacob Brown, who played it to Conor Chaplin whose cross field ball eventually found Dimitri Cavare. Cavare's cross is headed towards goal by Alex Mowatt, but the keeper can watch it sail over the bar.
  • 15:19pm

14 Freddie Woodman collects a powerful low cross from Dimitri Cavare before it can reach the waiting Conor Chaplin. The full-back is definitely enjoying the freedom he's got with this change of system, with him playing as a wing-back on the right.
  • 15:21pm

16 minutes in and the first chance for the visitors as a cross is looped in for Sam Surridge and the striker's effort is blocked for a corner. The Reds immediately win the ball back from the short corner and advance again.
  • 15:22pm

17 A break in play as Cauley Woodrow takes a knock, but the striker's back on his feet and walks to the sidelines.
  • 15:24pm

19 Andre Ayew is played through on the right with an excellent ball from George Byers in the middle of the park, and the forward makes time in the box with a clever shimmy away from Toby Sibbick. His left footed shot is well saved by Brad Collins.
  • 15:28pm
    Jacob Brown tries a shot
  • 15:28pm

23 Sam Surridge receives the ball in the box and holds it up before trying to play in Tom Carroll, but his flick on is well defended by Aapo Halme and it's cleared. The visitors are seeing a bit more of the ball after Barnsley's blistering start - hopefully they don't rue their missed chances.
  • 15:29pm
Bambo Diaby is back in the side today
  • 15:30pm

25 Close from Cameron McGeehan as he strikes from the edge of the box after Conor Chaplin collects a deflected Dimitri Cavare cross and lays it off for the midfielder. It was a bit closer than his first effort.
  • 15:34pm

29 George Byers swings his boot at it from long range, but his strike is collected by Brad Collins.
  • 15:36pm

31 Sam Surridge is getting frustrated up front for Swansea. He's marshalled by Aapo Halme who then wins a throw for the Reds on the right. The Finn looks good in the centre of the back three Barnsley have employed, and hasn't given Surridge an inch.
  • 15:37pm

33 A high looping cross from Dimitri Cavare on the right finds Cauley Woodrow at the back post. The striker is tracked by Joe Rodon and goes to ground, appealing for a penalty.
  • 15:42pm

37 Conor Chaplin with a teasing ball from the left side, finds Cameron McGeehan in the centre but under considerable pressure the midfielder heads over the bar.
  • 15:44pm

39 Jacob Brown wins a free kick in a decent position in the centre of the pitch. Bambo Diaby steps up and the centre-back hits it over the cross bar.
  • 15:47pm
Kenny Dougall is back on the pitch for the first team for the first time in seven months today
  • 15:48pm

43 A corner for Swansea as Bersant Celina is released down the left channel and his cross is blocked. The resulting ball into the box is well held by Brad Collins.
  • 15:49pm

    ADDED TIME
    2 minutes added time.
  • 15:52pm

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 0, Swansea City 0. A good start from the Reds, but one that didn't bring them the goal they probably deserved.
  • 16:08pm

Swansea are first back out onto the pitch for the second half, followed by the Reds.
  • 16:10pm

45 And the away side get us underway, immediately sending a long ball up the pitch towards their own supporters which is scooped up by Brad Collins.
  • 16:12pm

46 Dimitri Cavare does really well to intercept a Swansea pass and motor up the pitch, but his through ball up to Cauley Woodrow has too much pace on it and it's out for a goal kick.
  • 16:14pm

49 Brad Collins denies Andre Ayew, who was found in the box by George Byers' cross from the left, and had time to get a powerful shot away from close range.
  • 16:16pm

50 Cameron McGeehan again balloons the ball over the bar from a decent position, after some good work by Conor Chaplin to cross the ball from the right.
  • 16:17pm

52 The Reds are stringing together a few decent attacks now, starting this half much the same as they started the first.
  • 16:19pm

54 Another long throw from Dimitri Cavare on the right, and Barnsley win a corner from the same side.
  • 16:23pm

57 Toby Sibbick and Bambo Diaby combine well to deny Sam Surridge who receives a long ball and advances into the box, with the latter pulling off a well-time challenge and clearing.
  • 16:26pm

60 A good save from Brad Collins but a let-off for Barnsley, as Bambo Diaby attempts to dribble out of defence but is caught by Matt Grimes and loses possession. The ball is played through for Sam Surridge, but the striker's effort lacks a bit of power and is saved by Collins' outstretched leg.
  • 16:29pm

63 Another superb save by Barnsley's keeper. Andre Ayew beats Toby Sibbick for pace on the right and crosses to the far post. Bersant Celina gets his head to it from extremely close, but Collins gets his body in the way to stop it going over the line. Fantastic goalkeeping.
  • 16:31pm

    GOAL!
66 Andre Ayew forces the ball in from close range after a goalmouth scramble.
  • 16:34pm

67 It had been coming for the visitors, with Brad Collins pulling off a series of quality saves, including one to deny Bersant Celina in the run-up to the goal. The keeper palmed it high into the air, which allowed Andre Ayew two chances to stab the ball home. The first was blocked by Toby Sibbick off the line, but Barnsley's defence couldn't stop the second going over the line.
  • 16:34pm

    GOAL!
69 Alex Mowatt with an immediate response, sliding the ball home from close range after some good work from Conor Chaplin on the right.
  • 16:37pm

    YELLOW CARD
72 George Byers gets put in the book for a bad challenge on Jacob Brown on the halfway line.
  • 16:40pm

75 Swansea win a succession of corners from either side after an end-to-end period of play. Alex Mowatt's goal has really fired up the home fans.

  • 16:51pm

85 Alex Mowatt with a curling effort after cutting in from the right, nearly capping a great move with an even better goal. Elliot Simoes found Jacob Brown on the right and the winger slid it to Mowatt, whose effort from just inside the box found the roof of the net.
  • 16:53pm

88 Brad Collins saves from Andre Ayew, who had got the run on Bambo Diaby and released a low left-footed shot from the left. The Ghanaian forward has shown his class today - but so has the Reds' keeper.

FULL-TIME: Barnsley 1, Swansea City 1. A fair result for an even and entertaining match.
