Barnsley took the lead in the first minute but lost 3-1 to Brentford on Sunday afternoon, their third successive defeat which extended their winless run to nine games.

Cauley Woodrow’s spectacular strike put the Reds ahead but visiting hat-trick hero Ollie Watkins levelled before the break then put his side in front 54 seconds into the second half before adding a third.

Barnsley are third-bottom in the Championship table, three points adrift of safety, having collected five points from their first nine games.

The hosts started strongly and could have gone 2-0 up but, as the game went on, Brentford’s front free of Watkins, Sergi Canos and Said Benrahma began to cause chaos for the Reds’ defence who could not cope with their pace and movement. The Bees missed several chances to win by a wider scoreline as they dominated the one-sided second half in front of the Sky Sports cameras.  Daniel Stendel made two changes from the side that lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest eight days earlier as he brought in Dimitri Cavare for Dani Pinillos, with Jordan Williams moving to left-back, and Conor Chaplin for Mallik Wilks up front.

The game started superbly for the Reds as, after 59 seconds, Woodrow curled a 22-yard effort into the top right corner. It was his second goal of the season, following another stunning strike against Charlton Athletic last month, and ended a wait of three games across more than a month for a Barnsley goal.

Woodrow almost got another in the 11th minute but his low effort from just inside the box, after touches by Chaplin and Alex Mowatt, was deflected and went just wide of the bottom left corner.

Brentford, who started the game poorly, had their first shot in the 25th minute when a counter-attack on the left saw Watkins square in the box to Benrahma whose 15-yard effort was brilliantly kept out by Brad Collins who sprang to his left.

Luke Thomas fired tamely at David Raya from the edge of the box then, later, he beat the goalkeeper to a lofted Woodrow pass on the left wing and squared to Chaplin whose shot at the empty net from just inside the box was blocked by Pontus Jansson. It proved to be a crucial moment as the away side were on top for the rest of the game.

The equaliser came on 35 minutes as Brentford counter-attacked from a corner and, with Barnsley getting back into position, worked the ball well with Benrahma finding Mathias Jensen on the right wing whose cross was headed in from six yards out by the unmarked Watkins.

Brentford then came incredibly close to a second goal in four minutes as Watkins went clean through and beat Collins but his shot hit the base of the left post then, when the ball came back to him, he smashed against the crossbar eight yards out before Benrahma fired wide from even closer.

There was another early goal in the second half but this time for the visitors who worked the ball down the right wing before Canos’ cross was misjudged by Collins and Watkins headed in almost on the line.

Barnsley were then furious that the referee did not play advantage after a foul on Jacob Brown with Thomas running through on goal on the right. From the resulting free-kick, Woodrow headed tamely wide at the back post.

Jensen had a 20-yard shot deflected narrowly over the bar by Aapo Halme then Benrahma put Canos clean through on the right of the box but he shot into the side netting when he could easily have passed to the unmarked Watkins who would have had a hat-trick.

Stendel brought on Wilks and Patrick Schmidt for Thomas and Chaplin after 63 minutes but the Bees soon scored a third. Benrahma played a superb pass through the home defence to Canos on the right wing then the Spaniard’s cross was met six yards out by the unmarked Watkins and, although Collins got a hand to the headed effort, the ball trickled over the line.

The visitors nearly got another when Benrahma exchanged clever passes in the box with Watkins but fired a low effort just wide of the bottom left corner from 12 yards out. Benrahma then fired a free-kick straight at Collins.

Barnsley (4-4-2): Collins; Cavare (Thiam 75mins), Halme, Andersen, J Williams; Brown, Mowatt, Sibbick, Thomas (Wilks 63); Chaplin (Schmidt 63), Woodrow. Subs: Walton, Pinillos, Styles, Green.  Goal: Woodrow 1.

The Reds are currently in the highest of the three relegation places in the Championship table with five points from eight games. After being unbeaten in 29 home league games across nearly 18 months, they have lost their last two Oakwell fixtures – 3-1 to Luton Town and 2-0 to Leeds United.
  • 12:50pm

Brentford spent more money in the last off-season than any other Championship club, bringing in ten new players for a combined total of about £30million having sold Neal Maupay and Ezri Konsa for a similar amount.
  • 12:51pm

Their summer changes have not brought them immediate success as they have only won two of their eight league matches so far this season. Their last match was a 0-0 home draw with Stoke City on Saturday which left them 17th in the table with eight points from as many games.
  • 12:55pm

Thomas Frank’s team have netted only five goals which makes them the division’s second lowest-scorers behind Barnsley with four.
  • 12:55pm

Brentford won their first away game of the season at Middlesbrough but have since lost at Leeds United, Charlton Athletic and Preston North End without scoring.
  • 12:57pm

Coach Chris Stern, who works under Daniel Stendel, said: “You have to put Brentford’s performances in perspective. They are underachieving, in terms of the results they have had from the performances they have had. They are a pretty strong team, with good quality. They are similar to us in pressing high and creating chances but the only negative is they didn’t score.”
  • 12:59pm
Stern added: “I hope it is a game that suits us in front of the TV cameras and we want to put a good performance in. When I think back to the TV games last season, we had very good performances and we want to keep that run of winning games in front of the cameras.”
  • 13:00pm

This match could bring a return to Oakwell for one of last season’s promotion heroes Ethan Pinnock. The centre-back played every game as Barnsley finished second in League One before being sold to Brentford for £3million. He was a regular starter in the opening weeks of the season but has been dropped for the last three games.
  • 13:05pm

Stern said: “He was an important player and we were all sad when we sold Ethan. That he is not in their starting 11 shows how high quality this league is and how much quality Brentford have in their squad.”
  • 13:05pm

Brentford’s main threat is expected to be Ollie Watkins, who has scored four of their five goals so far this season and was linked to a move to the Premier League last summer.
  • 13:05pm

Barnsley have traditionally struggled in games against Brentford, winning just 13 of the 57 meetings with 23 defeats. After losing 8-1 in their first meeting in 1934, the Reds won just one of the first 23 games between the clubs.
  • 13:09pm

Barnsley have been more successful in recent years with just one defeat in the last eight meetings, although five of those have ended in draws. The Bees have not won in four trips to Oakwell since 2004, drawing three then losing 2-0 in the Reds’ final home game of the 2017/18 relegation season.
  • 13:15pm
Goalkeeper Brad Collins says playing on Sky will make no difference: “I want the team to go out, there, play very well and get the win. I am not too bothered about the cameras. In every game you want to play well. As long as we get some points, that’s all I care about. You don’t think about the cameras.”
  • 13:22pm

The Reds are currently in the highest of the three relegation places in the Championship table with five points from eight games, but they have drawn praise for their displays in the 0-0 draw at Wigan Athletic and the narrows losses to Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.
  • 13:23pm

Stern told the Chronicle: “It doesn’t help you that much if you play good and you lose. You still have to grab some points. Our performances have put us in a positive way and we are on the right track to win games and pick up points. The confidence is the same as at the start of the season, the last performances have shown that. Even if the players do have a little dip in confidence, it is up to us as coaching staff to keep it high.”
  • 13:28pm
The Reds have not netted in three games and only four times in their nine matches this season. Stern said: “We work on it in training and try to keep the lads as confident as possible. It is important we don’t turn negative, we keep the confidence in our strikers and they will score. Sometimes it is about how you take a shot, how convinced you are to score. We haven’t done anything different in training.”
  • 13:33pm

The visitors get us underway on a dreary day at Oakwell.
  • 13:34pm

  • 13:37pm

3 What a start for the Reds. They've had the visitors on the back foot from the first whistle, Cauley Woodrow's swerving effort from 25 yards out giving them a leg up immediately.
  • 13:39pm

5 Luke Thomas tracks back, covering for the advancing Jordan Williams with a superb sliding tackle. Williams lays it back to Toby Sibbick who finds Jacob Brown on the right and the home side get a corner.
  • 13:40pm

7 Some sarcastic cheers for Brentford 'keeper David Raya from the home supporters, as he comes out of his box and shanks a clearance into the East stand.
  • 13:41pm

8 Good defending from Jordan WIlliams as he stops a through ball from getting to striker Ollie Watkins with a no-nonsense clearance.
  • 13:43pm

9 Excellent control from Conor Chaplin to collect a long ball, but the striker's shot is blocked in the box. He gives chase and wins his side a throw from deep on the right.
  • 13:44pm

10 It's inches wide from Cauley Woodrow as he attempts an outside-of-the-boot shot with his left, after a lay-off just inside the penalty area. The ref says it took a deflection and it's a corner for Barnsley.
  • 13:45pm

12 Alex Mowatt's short corner is whipped into the box by Luke Thomas, but easily collected by the Brentford 'keeper.
  • 13:51pm

17 First real opportunity to level for the visitors, as Mathias Jensen gets a cross off to Sergi Canos in the middle, but the ball spins off the forward's head. It's collected by Said Benrahma on the left wing, but he runs the ball out of play.
  • 13:54pm

19 A loose ball allows Henrik Dalsgaard to break down the right for Brentford, but his cross is a poor one and it's cleared. The ball then goes up the other end for Conor Chaplin to play Cauley Woodrow into the box. Woodrow sends it into the bottom corner, but the forward's judged to be offside.
  • 13:57pm

23 A Brentford corner fails to beat the first man and Alex Mowatt sends Conor Chaplin up the pitch. The pacey striker has looked very lively so far, and he takes on his man skilfully.
  • 13:58pm

24 Ollie Watkins breaks the offside trap on the left wing and surges into the box. He squares it to Said Benrahma, who forces a fine save from Brad Collins who has had little to do so far.
  • 14:01pm

27 Conor Chaplin eaves his way up the pitch with Luke Thomas a couple of steps in front of him. He gets into the box and his side-footed effort is comfortably saved by David Raya.
  • 14:03pm

29 Luke Thomas with a clever dummy to take on Henrik Dalsgaard, and he very nearly finds Cauley Woodrow but his through ball is stopped by Pontus Jansson.
  • 14:06pm

32 A long ball is played to Luke Thomas on the left wing. David Raya rushes out to collect but the winger takes him on and slides it across to Conor Chaplin with the goal gaping. The striker can't control his shot and it spins out off of the defender.
  • 14:07pm

33 Thomas stayed down after the 'keeper's challenge and he's walking pretty gingerly off the pitch after a break.
  • 14:08pm

    GOAL!
35 Ollie Watkins heads it in from Mathias Jensen's cross from the right. The striker was completely unmarked.
  • 14:10pm

36 The Reds centre-backs were still up the pitch from an earlier corner, giving the Brentford striker a pretty easy task to knock it past Brad Collins from six yards.
  • 14:13pm

38 Unbelievable stuff for the visitors who have three successive attempts at goal within seconds. Ollie Watkins twice hits the woodwork, first breaking the offside trap and hitting the far post and then, as the Reds defenders struggled to recover, hitting the bar. Said Benrahma then hammers it wide. Very lucky for Barnsley.
  • 14:17pm

42 The heavy rain has had a real effect on the game, with both sides unable to get going as the ball struggles to move across the turf. Brentford have had the better of the last ten minutes or so, particularly with that earlier trio of misses.
  • 14:18pm

  • 14:49pm

55 Dimitri Cavare is forced to concede a corner as he heads Sergi Canos' cross out of play. Canos looks to have Jordan Williams beat on the visitors' right.
  • 14:52pm

57 Jacob Brown is dragged down by Christian Norgaard 40 yards out and the ref blows his whistle - but if he had waited a second, Luke Thomas would've been through on goal. The Barnsley players are a bit frustrated at that decision.
