Kieffer Moore headed in an 88th-minute winner as Barnsley beat Southend United 1-0 at Oakwell on Saturday.

The result extended the Reds’ unbeaten home run to 12 games and kept them fourth in the League One table. The match was far from a classic and contained long periods of inactivity but, after Southend started both halves the better, Barnsley improved and narrowly shaded the contest while creating marginally the better chances.

Head coach Daniel Stendel made just one change from the side that beat Bristol Rovers 1-0 the previous week, with Mamadou Thiam replacing George Moncur. Adam Jackson dropped out of the squad due to injury but Cauley Woodrow and Zeki Fryers were fit enough to sit on the bench after missing the entirety of the season so far.

Southend had an excellent chance to take the lead after less than 90 seconds when Simon Cox’s pull-back from the left side of the Barnsley box found Harry Bunn 12 yards out in the centre of the area but he fired a shot wide of the bottom right corner.

Adam Davies then made the first save of the game, diving to his left to easily catch a Bunn header after an impressive move down the hosts’ left opened them up in the tenth minute.

After a very poor start, Barnsley began to improve. Dimitri Cavare glanced a header over from an Alex Mowatt corner but then gave away the ball in his half to Cox whose shot was straight at Davies from outside the box.

The game then quietened down but Thiam looked to have a fine chance from a Brad Potts cross but could not keep his balance which allowed visiting goalkeeper Mark Oxley to get there first.

The hosts then had two excellent chances to take the lead in the final minutes before the break. Moore went clean through after Mowatt dinked a pass over the Southend defence but the ball bounced up awkwardly and he had to try an acrobatic volley which was powerful but too close to Oxley who palmed it away. Dani Pinillos’ left-wing cross was then met on the right of the box by Potts who volleyed just wide of the bottom left corner from 12 yards out.

Thiam fired wide with a low long-range effort early in the second half but Southend then had a good spell. Bunn hesitated when clean through in the Barnsley box and the ball was eventually cleared then Taylor Moore weakly turned the ball towards goal after a penalty box scramble with Davies easily saving down to his right.

Stendel brought on Ryan Hedges after 56 minutes in an attacking midfield position in place of Mike Bahre who had a quiet game. Midway through the first half, Moore’s looping header from a Mowatt corner hit the top of the bar then Cameron McGeehan brought the ball down but volleyed over from four yards out at an award angle.

Woodrow was then introduced off the bench for Thiam and Barnsley almost scored within seconds as Hedges’ clever pass put Potts through on goal with no one around him on the left of the box but he slammed a shot from 13 yards out against the crossbar.

Moore then shot straight at Oxley on the turn from 25 yards out then the ball was in the net at the other end but the linesman ruled that Cox was offside when latching on to Dru Yearwood’s throughball and firing a shot into the bottom left corner.

Stendel then brought on Moncur for the final seven minutes with Dani Pinillos going off and Hedges being moved to left-back. Hedges was then ruled offside when latching on to a long ball and crossing low from the left for Woodrow to tap in with the flag up.

The winner came with two minutes to play as Mowatt’s right-wing corner was swung towards the near post where Moore nodded in from just a few yards out.

  • 13:53pm
Isgrove has played just one minute of league football this season due to injury while Fryers, pictured, has been out since hurting his ankle in July. Fryers, 26, and Isgrove, 25, have started 43 and 47 league matches respectively in injury-plagued careers.

He is yet to play for Barnsley after signing on loan from Fulham in August with a permanent deal agreed for January.

Barnsley are currently unbeaten at home in seven games this season and 11 stretching back to March. It is their best run since a 12-match league sequence in 2007/08.
  • 14:14pm
A week ago, Alex Mowatt’s superb goal meant they won 1-0 at home to relegation-battling Rovers which head coach Daniel Stendel admitted was not their best display. Winkler wants an improvement but ultimately is just focused on winning. He said: “I would just like to have three points. But we know we can play better and with more quality.”
  • 14:17pm
Winkler said: “Sometimes I am more happy just for a win and how we fight for three points. We have shown already that we can play better than against Bristol Rovers but good teams are made from ugly wins like that. It was important to get three points, it doesn’t matter that it was a little bit dirty or ugly. We had lost a couple of games but we have taken the first step towards a winning run. The mood in the dressing room is always good but it has been better after we won the game.”
  • 14:26pm

Southend are 11th in the table, six places behind Barnsley. They are currently enduring an injury crisis which has claimed eight first team players including top-scorer Tom Hopper.
  • 14:27pm

United had won their last three away league matches – at Wycombe, Burton and Gillingham – before going down 3-0 at third-placed Sunderland on Saturday.
  • 14:36pm

The Essex club have won four of their eight away games and have picked up 13 points on the road compared to ten from eight games at Roots Hall. They have seven wins and seven defeats while only the bottom two Bradford City and AFC Wimbledon have fewer draws than their two.
  • 14:42pm
Winkler said of Southend: “They play very directly but have good ball possession. It’s all about winning or losing, they have just two draws. We think they could have had more points from their results. In some ways they remind me of our team in the way they play.”
  • 14:45pm

Chris Powell, the former England left-back and manager of Charlton and Huddersfield, is in his first full season in charge of the club he used to play for.
  • 14:47pm

Powell has a good record at Oakwell as a manager, having won 6-0 and then drawn 2-2 after being 2-0 down, both in 2013 with Charlton. He suffered 1-0 defeats there as a player for Derby in 1997 and Leicester in 2010.
  • 14:50pm

The two clubs have met 45 times, with Barnsley winning 13 and losing 17. Southend did the double over the promotion-bound Reds in 2015/16.
  • 14:52pm
The Shrimpers recovered from a Josh Scowen penalty – which had been won by Marley Watkins – to win 2-1 in Essex, with all the goals coming in the first half.
  • 14:53pm
United then triumphed 2-0 at Oakwell. They scored in the fourth minute then, after Conor Hourihane put a penalty wide following a foul on Ashley Fletcher, they netted again in the 96th.
  • 14:53pm

It was a second successive win by that scoreline in Barnsley for the Shrimpers who also knocked the Reds out of the FA Cup in 2007.
  • 14:54pm

Southend’s dangerman is likely to be veteran striker Simon Cox. The 31-year-old – who has 30 international caps for the Republic of Ireland – has six goals this season with five coming in his last seven games. The former Premier League forward scored for Nottingham Forest in wins over Barnsley in both 2012 and 2013.
  • 14:56pm

Behind Cox is Dru Yearwood, an 18-year-old central midfielder who is being scouted by some Premier League clubs. Yearwood, who was called up for England under 18s last season, has already played 37 first team games despite being injured for the first two months of the current campaign.
  • 14:58pm

The players are now walking out onto the pitch to the usual sound of Timerider's Cocoon

  • 15:05pm

2 – Massive chance for Southend. Simon Cox goes down the left wing and pulls the ball back from the byline in the box to Harry Bunn who fires wide of the left post from 12 yards out.
  • 15:06pm

That was a huge opportunity to take the lead for the visitors. Former Huddersfield man Bunn could pick his spot with the goal at his mercy but made a mess of it
  • 15:08pm

Southend have started on top here. Liam Lindsay had to clear a cross from the right a moment ago and now Kieffer Moore has to defend a free-kick from the left
  • 15:09pm

6 United right-back Jason Demetriou has a 20-yard shot which is deflected for a corner
  • 15:09pm

7 Dieng heads the corner from the edge of the box and it is cleared by Ethan Pinnock
  • 15:10pm

There has been a goal in the first 20 minutes of all Barnsley's last 7 games. The visitors look more likely to open the scoring so far
  • 15:12pm

9 Sam Mantom's cross from the right drifts just away from Adam Davies' top left corner
  • 15:13pm

10 Another chance for the Shrimpers. After a good move down the right, Cox's header eight yards out lacks power and Davies dives to his left to catch easily
  • 15:14pm

23 Another cross into the Southend box is cleared and Cavare shoots well wide from 30 yards
  • 15:26pm

More than halfway through the first half now. Barnsley started very very slowly but have been much better in the last 15 minutes or so
  • 15:29pm

The game has quietened down a little bit in the last few minutes. Southend had probably had the better of the chances overall but Barnsley have played the better football more recently
  • 15:30pm

27 Taylor Moore is play in on the right of the box and hits the side netting with a shot from a very tight angle
  • 15:31pm

  • 15:35pm

White is back on and play begins again
  • 15:37pm

Almost into the final ten minutes of what has not been a vintage first half. Southend had the better of the first ten minutes, then Barnsley had a good 15 minutes but recently it's been quite dull and scrappy
  • 15:41pm

38 A decent Reds move sees Bahre play in Potts on the right and his low cross comes to Thiam who, after a defender only half clears, looks likely to have a tap-in but loses his balance and the goalkeeper gets there first
  • 15:44pm
