Barnsley conceded an 88th-minute equaliser but maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw against Walsall on Saturday.

The Reds struggled to reach their best form for the first 55 minutes but, after an own goal put them ahead, they had several excellent chances to go 2-0 up before the late leveller.

They have now made their longest unbeaten start to a season since 1946, and remain third with 15 points from seven matches.

Daniel Stendel made three changes from the side who beat Gillingham a week earlier, with Kenny Dougall and Adam Davies on international duty while Brad Potts missed the game through injury.  Jack Walton replaced Davies in goal while Cameron McGeehan came into central midfield for his first league start of the season and Mike-Steven Bahre was given his first league start for Barnsley on the wing.

Mamadou Thiam started up front with Kieffer Moore but swapped with George Moncur, who had begun on the left wing, midway through a dull first half.

Both sides had long-range efforts early on, with Thiam firing off target twice, but it was Walton who had to make the first save as he impressively tipped Morgan Ferrier’s header over following a cross from the right.

Moore had Barnsley’s first shot on target in the 20th minute, with Liam Roberts diving to his left to save easily. The Reds should have been given a penalty soon after when Jack Fitzwater clearly tripped Bahre in the box but referee Craig Hicks did not give it.

Dimitri Cavare fired wide and Moncur hit an effort from a tight angle straight at Roberts, while Connor Ronan fired long-range efforts over the bar for Walsall.

Ethan Pinnock almost put the hosts ahead in first half stoppage time but his flicked header from Daniel Pinillos’ free-kick was clawed out of the bottom corner by Roberts.

Stendel replaced McGeehan, who had a poor game, with striker Adeboyejo at half-time as Bahre went into central midfield and Moncur returned to the wing.

Walsall started the better in the second half, as Josh Gordon turned the ball over from close range when Barnsley tried to play him offside after clearing a corner. Luke Leahy then blasted a shot from the left of the box across the face of goal.

But it was the Reds who took the lead when they a short corner from the left and crossed to Victor Adeboyejo whose shot from close range was saved by Roberts before hitting Jack Fitzwater and going in.

Barnsley then had a series of superb chances for 2-0. Thiam blazed over unmarked 12 yards out after Moore’s right-wing cross rolled to him, then Moore made no connection to an Alex Mowatt cross when he should have headed home from close range.

The hosts also had two excellent chances on the counter-attack. Adeboyejo was again denied from close range by Roberts after good work by Moore and Moncur, who then later should have set up Moore for a tap-in but overhit the pass.

Barnsley were made to pay for their wastefulness in the 88th minute when substitute Andy Cook was given the time to turn into the box and fire in a 12-yard shot which Walton got a slight touch on.

The hosts still also won it when Lindsay headed down a corner and Moncur had a shot which was deflected and went agonisingly wide of the bottom left corner.

AS IT HAPPENED
  • 13:41pm

Good evening and welcome to the Chronicle’s live text coverage of Barnsley’s home match with Walsall from 3pm today.
  • 13:41pm

The Reds will be looking to maintain their unbeaten record this season, as will Walsall, with Daniel Stendel being forced into several changes due to international call-ups.
  • 13:47pm

Goalkeeper Adam Davies, who is also the captain, is with Wales this weekend while star midfielder Kenny Dougall is in Turkey for a training camp after receiving his first international training camp.
  • 13:47pm
The goalkeeper question is easily answered with Jack Walton having impressed in the Checkatrade Trophy win at Oldham Athletic on Tuesday. He is expected to start today with fellow youngster Jake Greatorex on the bench.
  • 13:53pm

As for central midfield, assistant coach Andreas Winkler said that Jared Bird or Cameron McGeehan or ‘one other player’ were the options to replace Dougall. Bird and McGeehan played at Oldham with the 20-year-old Bird particularly impressing.
  • 13:54pm
Winkler said of Bird: “He hasn’t been showing that level of performance in training every day but we have known for a couple of weeks that he is a match player, not a training player. He is very close to playing in the first team.”
  • 13:56pm

Winkler also said that the Reds have no other injury issues, with centre-back Liam Lindsay recovering from illness, and that he hopes to have a full squad available soon as Cauley Woodrow and Zeki Fryers are due back in training next week followed soon by Ryan Hedges.
  • 14:01pm

Barnsley: Walton; Cavare, Lindsay, Pinnock, Pinillos; Bahre, Mowatt, McGeehan, Thiam; Moncur; Moore.
  • 14:01pm

So no Brad Potts, who is thought to be injured, while Cameron McGeehan, Mike-Steven Bahre and Jack Walton come into the team.
  • 14:03pm

Subs: Greatorex, B Williams, Jackson, Bird, Isgrove, Brown, Adeboyejo.
  • 14:07pm

Walsall: Roberts; Devlin, Fitzwater, Guthrie, Leahy; Ronan, Dobson, Osbourne, Ginnelly; Gordon, Ferrier.
  • 14:07pm

Subs: Dunn, Morris, Cook, Kouhyar, Sangha, Johnson, Wilson.
  • 14:09pm

Victory at home to Walsall tomorrow would mean Barnsley have won more games in their first seven League One fixtures this season than they managed in their last 30 in the Championship.
  • 14:13pm

Daniel Stendel has gone for McGeehan, who has struggled to pass accurately in his two cup appearances this season and is less of a holding midfielder than Bird or Dougall
  • 14:14pm

It's also a first Barnsley league start for transfer window signing Mike-Steven Bahre
  • 14:16pm

The Reds are unbeaten in seven home games, stretching back into last season when they finished with a draws against Bristol City and Bolton Wanderers then wins over Sheffield United and Brentford. In this campaign, they have beaten Oxford United 4-0, drawn 0-0 with AFC Wimbledon and defeated Gillingham.
  • 14:19pm
Barnsley had two former Walsall players at the start of this season but let both Tom Bradshaw and Jason McCarthy go in the transfer window to Millwall and Wycombe Wanderers respectively.
  • 14:20pm

The two clubs have met 47 times with Barnsley winning 18 and Walsall 16. The Reds have won the last three meetings, all in the last two months of the 2015/16 season when they triumphed 3-1 in the West Midlands before recording the biggest ever League One play-off semi-final aggregate result.
  • 14:24pm
They won 3-0 at home in the first leg asJason Demetriou scored an own goal on the stroke of half-time then Sam Winnall netted twice within a minute early in the second half. Barnsley also won 3-1 in the second leg with goals from Adam Hammill, Ashley Fletcher and Josh Brownhill.
  • 14:28pm
The Saddlers triumphed 2-0 over Lee Johnson’s Reds at Oakwell earlier that season, after eight straight league defeats there since 1971.
  • 14:33pm

Fifth-placed Walsall have an identical record this season to the third-placed Oakwell club, having won four and drawn two of their league games so far, but with an inferior goal difference. They are two of five unbeaten clubs at the top of League One along with Peterborough, second-placed Portsmouth and fourth-placed Sunderland.
  • 14:35pm

Walsall drew their first away game at Scunthorpe United then won at AFC Wimbledon and Rochdale. Their most recent league match was Saturday’s goalless home draw with Blackpool, when victory would have given them their best ever start to a season. Like Barnsley, they also won 2-1 in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday at near neighbours Burton Albion.
  • 14:38pm

Winkler said: “It will be a pretty tough match. They haven’t lost, like us. We know they defend very hard and strong in a good, compact shape and they have two or three very good attackers with a lot of pace. We have to be very careful of the counter-attack. We might have to be patient and find something special to penetrate their defence.”
  • 14:39pm
If they win or draw, it will be Barnsley’s longest unbeaten start to a season since 1946/47 when a side that included legends Norman Rimmington and George Robledo did not lose any of their first ten matches.
  • 14:43pm

The last time the Reds began a season without losing any of their first six league fixtures was the only other occasion that they have commenced a campaign under a foreign manager – in 2003 when Gudjon Thordarson also won four and drew two but was sacked the following March during a run of one win in 18.
  • 14:46pm

Winkler added: “I am very delighted that we are unbeaten after six games. We don’t like losing.”
  • 14:49pm
Winkler says the team’s ability to see out victories can be improved, after Gillingham fought back and almost salvaged a draw before losing 2-1 at Oakwell on Saturday. He said: “We need to be more consistent over the 90 minutes. We can improve the composure on the ball and how we decide the pace of the match, but this is a learning process and it will come with experience.”
  • 14:50pm

He also believes they can be more clinical in front of goal despite scoring 14 in six games, a record only bettered by leaders Peterborough United. He said: “Our number of shots on target is 20 or 30 per cent higher than every other team in the league. If we can turn more of them into goals, that will be very very good for us.”
  • 14:52pm

The teams who Barnsley have played so far in the league all sit 12th or below. Asked if Walsall will be their toughest test so far, Winkler said: “I don’t know but I know if you are unbeaten you have great self-confidence. I think they will look forward to playing at Oakwell and showing how good they are.”
  • 14:54pm
Barnsley right-back Dimitri Cavare was nominated for August’s League One Player of the Month but missed out on the award. The Frenchman is also nominated for the fan-voted PFA Player of the Month.
  • 14:55pm

Head coach Daniel Stendel was not nominated for the official manager of the month award. Assistant Andreas Winkler said: “That is a great surprise to me. We didn’t lose and we have a special style of football for League One.”
  • 14:56pm

So we are just a few minutes away from kick-off at Oakwell and both sides are about to walk out onto the pitch
  • 14:59pm

The rain is teaming down here in Barnsley, with most fans wearing wintry clothes
  • 14:59pm

The players are walking out onto the pitch now to warm applause from the home fans and also from the smattering of Walsall supporters in the away end
  • 15:00pm

Kieffer Moore is the captain today in the absence of usual skipper Adam Davies, who is on international duty
  • 15:00pm

Moore is also the oldest player in the Reds starting line-up, having turned 26 last month
  • 15:02pm

    MATCH UNDERWAY
  • 15:04pm

McGeehan almost loses the ball in the first ten seconds but gets away with it. Then Barnsley produce a good move which ends with Dani Pinillos having a cross turned behind for a corner
  • 15:04pm

2 Mowatt takes the corner which is low and Moore tries a diving header but it is blocked
  • 15:05pm

It looks like Thiam is up front with Moore and Moncur is on the left wing with Bahre on the right
  • 15:07pm

4 First shot on goal so far is from Thiam who lets fly from 30 yards with a powerful effort which drifts several yards wide of the top flight corner
  • 15:07pm

It's been a bright start from the home side whose fans are pretty noisy as well
  • 15:08pm

6 A first opportunity for Walsall. Pinillos loses the ball deep in his half to Josh Gordon who then passes inside to George Dobson but a low 25-yard shot goes well wide
  • 15:10pm

7 Another effort from Thiam as he meets Liam Lindsay's left-wing cross at the back post ten yards out at a tight angle. Again he makes a good connection but blazes well over the bar, when it would have been one of the best goals seen here for many years
  • 15:11pm

Walsall are playing a 4-5-1 today, having dropped top-scorer Andy Cook who they signed in the summer from Tranmere. They are known this season for being very organised and hard to break down
  • 15:12pm

9 Morgan Ferrier gets the better of Liam Lindsay then, after his low cross is cleared by Pinnock, Josh Gordon fires over with an ambitious 25-yard volley
  • 15:14pm

Barnsley have been marginally the better team in the first 11 minutes, but neither side have had any opportunities other than long range efforts which have all gone wide of the target
  • 15:16pm

13 First save of the game and it's a good one by Walton, tipping Ferrier's header over the bar from a right-wing cross. Barnsley would have been angry if that had gone is as Mowatt appeared to be fouled in the build-up. Pinnock heads away the follow-up corner
  • 15:19pm

Walsall have had the better of the last five minutes or so with Barnsley looking quite hesitant on the ball in their half. McGeehan nearly lets an attacker through on goal but recovers with a tackle and the ball goes out for a goal kick
  • 15:20pm

18 A good move by Barnsley but it ends in Thiam, who was at the heart of it, overhitting a cross which is easily caught by the goalkeeper Liam Roberts
  • 15:23pm

20 - Barnsley have their first shot on target as Moore tries as low- 20-yard effort which Roberts easily saves diving low to his left
  • 15:23pm

The Reds have dominated the ball in the last few minutes after a difficult period
  • 15:25pm

The rain seems to have increased in the last few minutes, and it is really pouring down at Oakwell
  • 15:26pm

Halfway through the first half and Barnsley certainly haven't been at their best but they have looked a lot better in the last five minutes
  • 15:28pm

25 That looked a clear penalty, as Bahre is tripped in the box by Jack Fitzwater but referee Craig Hicks gives nothing
  • 15:31pm

Barnsley are looking to break forward in numbers whenever they can but they can't quite find the killer pass to unlock this stubborn Walsall defence
  • 15:33pm

Walsall goalkeeper Liam Roberts sums up some of the quality in this game but blasting a free-kick straight out of play
  • 15:34pm

32 Moncur has a volleyed shot blocked in the box then Thiam picks up the loose ball and wins a corner
  • 15:36pm

Thiam and Moncur have swapped places, with the Frenchman moving out to the left instead of being up front with Moore. That seems a much more natural position for both players
  • 15:38pm

35 Pinnock beaten on the edge of the box but Mowatt makes a saving tackle then Cavare kicks it out off a corner under no pressure. Pinnock heads the set piece away
  • 15:39pm

37 Moore clears another corner then Pinnock heads the follow-up cross away
  • 15:42pm

39 Cavare brings down a cross field ball, comes in from the right wing and hits a shot which trickles wide of the near post. Not a great effort
  • 15:43pm

40 A good move sees Thiam play in Moncur who beats a defender in the box but his shot from a tight angle of the left is easily caught by the goalkeeper Roberts
  • 15:45pm

41 Decent opportunity for Walsall as Ginnelly lays the ball off for Dobson in the box whose shot hits his own player then the follow up from Connor Ronan is well off target
  • 15:45pm

43 Ronan has another long-range effort which is well over the bar from a 30-yard free-kick
  • 15:48pm

Almost half-time now. Will we have a goal before the break?
  • 15:48pm

One minute extra has been added
  • 15:49pm

45+1 Pinnock's header from Pinillos' free-kick is clawed out of the bottom corner by Roberts. Probably the closest Barnsley have come
  • 15:49pm

    HALF-TIME: Barnsley 0, Walsall 0
  • 16:05pm

    SUB OFF
    Cameron McGeehan
  • 16:05pm

    SUB ON
    Victor Adeboyejo
  • 16:06pm

    SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
  • 16:07pm

McGeehan had a poor first half and can't complain with being taken off. He was very ponderous on the ball and looked like losing it at any moment
  • 16:07pm

Bahre is now playing alongside Mowatt in the middle with M oncur and Thiam on the wings
  • 16:08pm

47 Josh Gordon misses a great chance as he is judged onside when a cleared corner is put back into the box, but he fires over from four yards out. He had hardly any time to react but a deft flick would have put Walsall ahead
  • 16:09pm

The rain is still coming down but not as heavily as it was in the first half.
  • 16:11pm

50 Another good chance for Walsall. Left-back Luke Leahy fires wide from 12 yards out on the left of the box after Josh Ginnelly's run was ended by an Ethan Pinnock tackle
  • 16:12pm

It has been a slow start to the second half for the hosts who could easily be behind
  • 16:14pm

53 Barnsley win a corner then take it short but Pinillos' cross is caught by the goalkeeper
  • 16:15pm

    GOAL!
    Victor Adeboyejo
  • 16:16pm

The youngster gets his fourth goal of the season, although it may be reviewed as it seems to take several deflections on the way in
  • 16:17pm

A short corner led to a cross which Adeboyejo met from close range and, after several ricochets, it was in the back of the net
  • 16:17pm

The goal is against the run of play but it has livened up Oakwell.
  • 16:18pm

Barnsley have momentum now and win another corner
  • 16:18pm

58 Mowatt's corner is cleared at the near post
  • 16:19pm

So Adeboyejo has scored three league goals this season, all within ten minutes of coming on
  • 16:21pm
Jack Walton tips over Morgan Ferrier's effort in the first half.
  • 16:21pm

60 Dani Pinillos is currently down in the reds box receiving treatment. Josh GInnelly just fired a shot across goal from the left after Pinnock and Cavare left the ball for each other
  • 16:23pm

    YELLOW CARD
Isaiah Osbourne is booked for a foul on Alex Mowatt
  • 16:24pm

63 Thiam has been very good in this half and he has won another corner
  • 16:25pm

64 The corner was taken short again and ended with Moore mistiming a header from a cross then Moncur's rebound was blocked
  • 16:26pm

65 Thiam misses a glorious chance for 2-0. Moore's low cross from the right is totally missed by a defender and falls for the winger 12 yards out with the goal at his mercy but he blazes over. Will that cost Barnsley?
  • 16:27pm
The rain has thankfully eased off now.
  • 16:29pm

Barnsley have been well on top since they took the lead, with Walsall looking a bit shell-shocked. The match is two-thirds played
  • 16:31pm

69 Another great chance for 2-0 as Mowatt runs on to Pinillos' pass and curls in a fine cross from the left which Moore looks likely to head in from close range but he barely touches it as it whizzes through the box
  • 16:32pm
Victor Adeboyejo celebrates the goal that put the Reds 1-0 up.
  • 16:33pm

Coming up to the last 15 minutes and Barnsley look as though they are going for more goals rather than settling for 1-0
  • 16:36pm

74 Lindsay gives away a free-kick on the left of the Barnsley box but Moore heads it away
  • 16:37pm
New signing Mike Bahre has looked tidy on his league debut.
  • 16:37pm

77 Walsall win another corner but this time it is Lindsay who heads away and Pinnock followed uo
  • 16:38pm

77 What a chance for 2-0. Barnsley have a five on two break from the corner and, after Moncur passes to Moore, the big striker squares to Adeboyejo who looks certain to get his second eight yards out but Liam Roberts makes a fantastic save
  • 16:40pm

Almost into the last ten minutes here. Barnsley should be out of sight. But will they regret the missed chances after taking the lead?
  • 16:41pm

    SUB OFF
    Josh Ginnelly
  • 16:41pm

  • 16:46pm

Once again Pinnock is there to head away. He and Lindsay have been outstanding in the air
  • 16:47pm

86 Yet another break away with Moncur and Moore breaking with only one defender, but Moncur overhits the pass which would have given his team-mate a tap-in
  • 16:48pm

88 Another Walsall corner is cleared then, when the ball is put back in, Fitzwater misses a brilliant chance from five yards out but is then given offside
  • 16:49pm

    GOAL!
Andy Cook scores the equaliser in the 88th minute
  • 16:49pm

The substitute striker is able to turn in the box and fire in from ten yards out
  • 16:50pm

That is a sickener for the hosts who have had so many chances to make it 2-0
  • 16:50pm

Into the 90th minute now. This really will be two points dropped if the hosts do not claim a late winner
  • 16:53pm

90+2 Barnsley have a free-kick 30 yards out from goal after Moore is tripped
  • 16:54pm
