Barnsley moved into League One’s automatic promotion places with a 2-0 home win over Scunthorpe United.

Central midfielders Alex Mowatt and Cameron McGeehan got the goals in the first half of a match which the Reds dominated.

It was a fifth successive home win and means Barnsley are now unbeaten in 19 at Oakwell, their longest run since 1968, while they have not lost in ten league matches for the first time since 2005.

The win, and Portsmouth’s home draw with Doncaster Rovers, means Barnsley are now second in League One at the 30-game mark. They are still six points behind leaders Luton but with a game in hand.

Daniel Stendel made two changes from the side that drew 2-2 at Oxford United on Tuesday. Dani Pinillos replaced Ben Williams at left-back while Kieffer Moore was brought back in at the expense of Kenny Dougall as the Reds reverted from 4-5-1 to 4-3-3. Jack Walton, Zeki Fryers and Ryan Hedges returned to the bench with Adam Jackson and Jake Greatorex joining Williams in dropping out of the squad.

Although both goals carried an element of fortune about them, and the visitors ended the half well, Barnsley were the better side before the interval. Scunthorpe tried to play 3-1-4-2 but were pushed into a back five while their sloppy passing allowed the Reds to break at them with a pace and skill that had been missing in their last two performances.

Barnsley thought they had taken the lead in the fourth minute when Cauley Woodrow turned in Pinillos’ left-wing cross from close range only to see it ruled out for offside. Woodrow then side-footed wide from just inside the box after a good run and cross by Dimitri Cavare who had been set free on the right by Ethan Pinnock.

The hosts took the lead in the 16th minute when Alex Mowatt’s 30-yard shot appeared to deceive Jak Alnwick in the Scunthorpe goal and swerve past him into the net. Alnwick pointed to the sky straight afterwards then donned a cap to guard against the glare of the winer sun. Adam Hammill, the former Barnsley player, was in the Reds’ penalty box at the time the goal went in, nursing an injury picked up when he claimed he had been fouled by Pinnock for a penalty.

Moore then blasted a low 25-yard shot straight at Alnwick, who caught easily, before he chested the ball to Woodrow who fired just wide from a similar distance. Scunthorpe’s first real chance came in bizarre circumstances when Adam Davies caught a free-kick then ran to the edge of his box to clear it downfield but Cameron Burgess blocked and Davies had to head the resulting shot away just outside his area.

McGeehan, the former Scunthorpe loanee, fired over from 25 yards but he eventually made it 2-0 on 41 minutes. Mamadou Thiam’s shot appeared to hit Moore and loop into the air for McGeehan to head in from close range yards from the away fans who he refused to celebrate in front of.

The visitors almost pulled one back before the break but Byron Webster headed straight at Davies from Tony McMahon’s corner then the goalkeeper made a much better save to tip over Lee Novak’s close-range effort after a Funso Ojo run down the right of the box.

After the break, Barnsley controlled the game and saw out the victory while having the better chances.  Scunthorpe almost conceded a comical goal down when Rory McArdle chested past his own goalkeeper before clearing on the line. Woodrow then met a low Cavare cross ten yards out but sent his spinning low effort across the face of goal and narrowly wide.

Scunthorpe missed a chance to halve the deficit midway through the second half when Pinnock headed McMahon’s cross back to him but he blazed over inside the box. McGeehan then sent a 25-yard piledriver just wide of the visitors’ goal while substitute Ryan Hedges curled wide from a similar distance then Moore’s shot from outside the box was easily saved by Alnwick diving to his right.

Cavare also came close with a long-range effort which went a yard over the bar then substitute Mike Bahre’s overhead kick was straight at Alnwick.  Novak headed wide in injury-time but Scunthorpe were comprehensively beaten.

Barnsley are third in League One, a point off the two automatic promotion places, while the Iron are 14th, seven places and six points clear of the relegation zone.
  • 14:12pm

Scunthorpe have picked up more points from their last six games, 16, than any other side in League One including Barnsley who have two fewer.
  • 14:16pm

United had won two of 17 games, losing 14, from early October until Boxing Day which left them second-bottom. But Stuart McCall’s team have won five out of six with the other being a draw with high-flying Sunderland.
  • 14:20pm

Adam Hammill is started for Scunthorpe. The 30-year-old winger played 200 games for the Reds in three spells and is a fans’ favourite after scoring from long-range in both Wembley finals in 2016.
  • 14:21pm
Hammill told the Chronicle: “I am really looking forward to the game. I didn’t really get the send-off and the chance to say goodbye that I would have liked with it all happening so quickly last summer. So it will be great to see all my friends at Oakwell and all the fans.”
  • 14:24pm

Hammill added: “Everyone knows it is a club that means a huge amount to me but, when I cross that white line, I will be there to beat them. Myself and the Barnsley fans have always had a really good relationship but, between 3pm and 4.45pm on Saturday, we will be both be wanting different clubs to win. Hopefully I will still get a good reception after the game.”
  • 14:25pm

He added: “It should be a really good game against Barnsley who are doing really well this season. I still know most of their players and they are a great group of lads. They are playing some great football and they’re on a really good run. We will be looking to stop that on Saturday but, after that, I hope they go unbeaten all season and get in the top two.”
  • 14:27pm
The reverse fixture in August saw the Iron – who had sacked former Barnsley coach Nick Daws as manager a day earlier – go 2-0 up but Kieffer Moore pulled one back then Dimitri Cavare, who gave away a penalty for the opener, scored a stunning equaliser.
  • 14:30pm
Cavare said: “I made a mistake to give the penalty away then I got the assist and scored a goal so it was a big day. It will be good to see Adam Hammill but I will try to stop him so we can win.”
  • 14:35pm

Oakwell head coach Daniel Stendel said: “The first game against Scunthorpe was similar to Oxford this week when we came from 2-0 down. We lost two points in Scunthorpe but I hope we can win at home. If we play like we did in the second half at Oxford, we can get a good result. It’s good for Scunthorpe that they have been in better form but I think, if we play our best, we will win.”
  • 14:36pm

The Reds are unbeaten at Oakwell in 18 league matches across ten and a half months and a draw or win tomorrow would mean they are on their best such run since the 1967/68 season.
  • 14:40pm
Stendel said: “I am proud that we are unbeaten at home but I don’t think about it too much. Oakwell is a fortress for us and it’s very difficult for teams to play against us and our fans there.”
  • 14:43pm

Scunthorpe will be looking for a fourth successive away win after losing eight out of their previous nine on their travels. They have picked up more points away than at Glanford Park.
  • 14:45pm

Only Rochdale, who lost at Oakwell on Saturday, have conceded more goals in League One this season than Scunthorpe but United have let in just three in their last six matches.
  • 14:49pm
Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan was at Scunthorpe this time last season on loan from the Reds. He played 15 games for th e Iron, 12 from the bench, and scored in their play-off semi-final loss to Rotherham.
  • 14:50pm

Barnsley are unbeaten in their last nine league matches – with six wins and three draws – across almost two months since going down 1-0 at Wycombe Wanderers on December 8.
  • 14:51pm
It is their longest unbeaten run since early 2015 under Mark Burton then Lee Johnson. If they do not lose today, it will be the longest run since 2005.
  • 14:54pm

The two clubs have met 43 times, with Barnsley winning 19 and United 16. The Reds have won just one of the last five league meetings, at Glanford Park in 2015 when Burton was caretaker manager and Josh Scowen got the only goal.
  • 14:58pm

Scunthorpe have won just one of their last 17 trips to Oakwell but it was in 2014. The only meeting at Barnsley since then was a goalless draw on Good Friday in 2016.
