BARNSLEY amputee Wendy Clarke has completed her first race in an incredible time of 38 minutes.

The 41-year-old has taken up running so she can run around with her young son Ewan, seven. She competed in the 5k Parkrun at Locke Park on Saturday for the first time with her personal trainer.

Wendy lost her leg 12 years ago after a botched operation at Barnsley Hospital. She had been dancing with friends in Pharaoh’s nightclub in 2000 when she broke her leg and was taken to hospital.

She had broken her tibia and fibula and needed an operation to insert pins to fix her bones in place. But the operation was done with the wrong piece of equipment - something Wendy did not find out until a year-and-a-half later when she pursued why her leg wasn’t healing properly.
