Barnsley gained promotion to the Championship with a 3-1 play-off final victory over Millwall at Wembley on Sunday.

The Reds, who were bottom of League One in December, added promotion to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy they collected at the same stadium last month in a breath-taking second half of the season.

Ashley Fletcher put the Reds ahead after 90 seconds then Adam Hammill doubled the lead with a superb long-range strike on 19 minutes. Higham man Mark Beevers pulled one back for Millwall before half-time but Lloyd Isgrove restored the two-goal advantage with 16 minutes left as he netted his first goal for the Reds.

Barnsley named an unchanged team for the sixth successive game while Marley Watkins was back on the bench after more than six weeks out with a jaw injury. Millwall centre-back Byron Webster picked up an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Tony Craig.

Beevers had already headed a decent chance wide in the first minute when Fletcher put the Reds ahead in the second. Sam Winnall flicked on a kick from goalkeeper Adam Davies then the Manchester United man ran past both Carlos Edwards and Beevers before firing into the bottom left corner from 12 yards out on the right of the box.

Fletcher then had another great chance as he beat the offside trap and was put clean through in yards of space on the right by a long ball. But the angle was tight and Millwall goalkeeper Jordan Archer rushed out to block the shot.

It was 2-0 when Conor Hourihane won the ball on the halfway line and found Hammill who cut past Edwards before curling an outstanding 25-yarder into the top right corner.

Millwall pulled one back on 34 minutes when, after Hourihane and Josh Scowen both lost headers defending a corner, Craig's miskick fell to Beevers who turned his former Penistone Grammar School class-mate Marc Roberts before firing high into the net from close range.

The Reds led 2-1 at the break and had started the second half fairly well. But Millwall had a good chance to level midway through the second half when Steve Morison went through and rounded goalkeeper Davies. The cross was cleared before Jimmy Abdou scuffed a shot then Aidan O'Brien's weak follow-up effort was easily saved.

It was Barnsley who got the all-important next goal when Isgrove headed in a Hourihane corner at the near post from close range. It was his first goal in 36 matches on loan from Southampton.

Millwall's Chris Taylor missed a great chance to reduce the deficit when he went clean through after O'Brien flicked on a long ball but Davies threw himself to his right to make an outstanding save.

The margin of victory could have been greater but substitute Watkins was denied a penalty late on. It did not matter as Barnsley will be playing Championship football next season.
