Barnsley conceded three high-quality goals in their 3-0 home defeat despite a good performance against Premier League Everton on Saturday.

The Reds created plenty of chances and dominated parts of the game but could not find the net then were beaten by great long-range strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Ross Barkley as well as a fine Gerard Deulofeu finish.

Paul Heckingbottom made three changes from the starting line-up for the 3-1 win at League Two Cheltenham four days earlier as summer signings Andy Yiadom, George Moncur and Elliot Lee came in for James Bree, Josh Scowen and Marley Watkins. The Reds had Benin international Sessi D'Almeida on the bench as part of a trial. Ex-Red John Stones did not play for the visitors but his former Oakwell academy colleague Mason Holgate started at centre-back.

Everton took the lead in the ninth minute when Belgium international Mirallas curled a delightful free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards.

Barnsley almost responded within a minute when Adam Hammill's corner was headed on by Sam Winnall to Alfie Mawson who thundered a volley against the left post. Winnall then nodded a Yiadom cross just wide.

Barnsley's former Everton goalkeeper Adam Davies kept the score at 1-0 with an excellent touch around his right post from Deulofeu who had been put clean through by Kieran Dowell's defence-splitting pass.

The visiting goalkeeper Joel Robles was then called into action as he had to dive to his right to repel a 25-yard shot by Yiadom. The Reds right-back then lost the ball on the edge of his box and Deulofeu forced another good save from Davies with a chip from the left of the area.

Barnsley were the better team for the second half of the first half. Winnall missed another good headed chance when he failed to connect properly with a Conor Hourihane cross from the right. Yiadom then stabbed wide from a tight angle five yards out on the right from an excellent Hammill cross. A good Tom Bradshaw header then put Lee clean through but he was denied by a fine Robles save.

The Reds also began well after the break and Winnall missed the best chance of all when he met another fine Hammill cross unmarked in the middle of the box but headed over the bar.

It was the Premier League side who scored next as Deulofeu ran onto an excellent through ball from England international Barkley, who had come on at the break, and beat Davies with a good finish.

Barnsley responded well with Bradshaw flicking a header just wide then his replacement Stefan Payne hitting the side netting with a rebound after Moncur had a shot saved. Barkley made it 3-0 with a superb left-footed drive from the edge of the box on 73 minutes.
