A DEVELOPER who destroyed a stretch of former canal without planning permission has lodged an appeal after being told to undo the damage or face a £20,000 fine.

Workmen closed a footpath and began ripping out trees and vegetation along the former Dearne and Dove canal bank behind Barnsley Trade Park at Stairfoot earlier this year.

One side of the canal bank was removed entirely which effectively destroyed the canal.

Michael Singh, of Swift Property and Management Ltd, was granted planning permission for the erection of two trade and warehouse units at Barnsley Trade Park, Wombwell Lane, last year.

The council confirmed the work extended well beyond the area covered by that planning application, and issued a temporary stop notice on January 20.
