Football stars from a Penistone school will travel to the county finals full of confidence after being crowned kings of Barnsley.

 

The St John's Primary School team triumphed at the Barnsley Schools' Football Tournament to qualify for the South Yorkshire competition, which will be played today.

 

Year six pupil Kyle Johnson, who was celebrating 11th his birthday, clinched the trophy for his team with both goals in a 2-0 win in the final after Jack Lenthall, from year five, won the semi-final with an emotional extra-time goal.

 

Teacher Tom Bower congratulated his players, following the tournament at Holy Trinity Academy, Athersley.

 

"We wish the boys all the best for the South Yorkshire tournament," he said. Today's competition will be played at Balby Carr Sports Community College, Doncaster.
