CATERING students from Barnsley College have been preparing and serving food for the British Frozen Food Federation Awards.

The students gained valuable experience by serving frozen products to a panel of judges, all of whom are members of the professional association for chefs - the Craft Guild of Chefs.

The judging took place back in April, with household names such as Iceland and Birdseye among the competitors.

Previous winners of the awards include JD Wetherspoons, Pizza Express and Aldi’s Specially Selected range, and this year’s competitors were prepared at Barnsley College’s high-standard catering facilities.

Alongside the opportunity to present to professionals, the students were also mentored in tasting and testing techniques.

The college’s Catering and Hospitality course leader, Martyn Hollingsworth, said: “It’s important for our students to understand the different varieties of careers in catering and food judging is one career path that is available to them. It was a great experience to be part of the judging process and the students fully enjoyed themselves.”

The partnership between the BFFF and Barnsley College is strengthened further by the organisations commitment to taking one student each year on a two-week placement at London’s Park Lane Hilton.
