CHALLENGES on BBC2’s Top Gear have got nothing on a Barnsley couple’s feat of motoring ingenuity and endurance.

Guy Green and Amy Loukes decided to quit their jobs and go travelling the Americas - North, Central and South - and decided in order to ‘go anywhere and everywhere’ they wanted to do it in a rugged 4x4 camper van.

But when they realised very few such things exist, and those that do are incredibly expensive, they decided to make their own from a battered old Land Rover Defender they painstakingly converted to a mobile home.

The couple, formerly of Blenheim Road, Barnsley, are now approaching a year on the road and have so far covered almost 26,000 miles.

They’ve driven right across Canada from East to West, up to Alaska, and down the west coast of North America through the states of Washington, Oregon, California and Arizona, crossing into Mexico where they spent four months-and-a-half months, before travelling into Belize and then Guatemala, from where they spoke to the Chronicle via a video call this week.
