THE WHEELS are in motion for a young Barnsley cyclist on a mission to become a future European champion.

Harrison Dainty, ten, competed against 1,000 of the best young riders from across the globe at the six-day Tour of Assen - regarded as a Tour de France for kids - placing an impressive eighth overall.

He represented Great Britain and Team Cystic Fibrosis, a local cycling team dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. His sister Molly, 12, has the condition and to date the cycling team’s efforts have pulled in more than £200,000 for the good cause.

Harrison, ranked fifth in the UK, came 11th in stage one; 14th in stage two, 19th in stage three, sixth in stage four, eighth in stage five and 14th in the last stage.

His sixth place in the all important individual time trial was key to him being coming eighth overall.

He is already booked to compete again next year.

“The hardest part was probably stage three, that was hard because it was pretty fast,” said Harrison.
