BARNSLEY has a Tory MP among its four representatives in Parliament following a disastrous night for the Labour Party.

Miriam Cates has been elected Conservative MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge - a seat which includes the two Penistone wards as well as Dodworth - a constituency extending down Dodworth Road to within a stone’s throw of Barnsley town centre.

She secured 23,688 votes - the highest vote share and biggest majority of any of the four MPs elected for Barnsley yesterday with 47.8 per cent of the vote. Her majority is 7,210.

Labour’s Dan Jarvis, Stephanie Peacock and John Healey all retained their seats in Barnsley Central, Barnsley East and Wentworth and Dearne, but with smaller majorities.

Penistone and Stocksbridge had previously been held by Labour's Angela Smith but she quit her party and ended up joining the Lib Dems.

Ms Smith contested the seat of Altrincham and Sale West for the Lib Dems, leaving Barnsley Councillor Hannah Kitching to contest Penistone and Stocksbridge for the Lib Dems, and Francyne Johnson, a Sheffield councillor, for Labour.
