A PLATTS Common swimming instructor and his workmates are heading to Windermere to do the Great North Swim in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.

Robert Blackburn, 32, of Guest Street, who works at Barnsley Metrodome, will do the two-mile swim in lake Windermere tomorrow.

Robert and his lifeguard workmates Thomas Lawcock, Sam Leake and Steven Bowkett hope to raise more than £1,000 and have been sponsored by shops and businesses in Hoyland and parents of children Robert teaches at the Metrodome.

He said: "We have never swum in open water before and temperatures will be cold. We all have to wear wetsuits."

Robert has done previous swimming challenges for charity. Between April 24 and May 9 last year he swam 1,344 lengths - amounting to a mile a day - for Macmillan Cancer Support.
