WEST End choreographer Steve Elias returned to Barnsley for the dance extravaganza Dancing Town.

Steve, who was behind the TV show Our Dancing Town, which was broadcast last year, has an ambition to work with communities and uncover what makes them unique.

He returned as part of a special guest appearance and held a musical workshop for children.

“It feels like only yesterday since I was in Barnsley - I think it was a fantastic idea to have a legacy event of Our Dancing Town,” he said.

“I felt very honoured to be invited back and host a workshop.

“I stepped onto the platform at the station and it felt like I was home.”

Steve’s workshop was to explore the musical side of dance and to develop dance skills.

“Having the children not only learning a combination of steps but also working as a team and laughing was wonderful to see.”

Steve has appeared on the West End in musicals such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Billy Elliot and has a theatrical career spanning about 25 years.

He sees the arts as a celebration of identity and community.

“It was wonderful to see children’s confidence grow during the dance workshop, even in such a short space of time.

“Dancing Town celebrates not only the town but its people and its heritage.”

Joan Dawson, 74, one of the inpromptu star of Our Dancing Town, was also at the workshop event.

She said: “It’s lovely to have the town dancing again and to see Steve back in Barnsley.

“It’s makes me think of all the wonderful memories I made during the filming of Our Dancing Town.

“I hope they do another legacy event next year.”
