Barnsley FC are looking to bring Athersley Rec's top-scorer Kai Hancock back for another trial while they are monitoring Shaw Lane's Alex Bryne.

The Reds were one of three Football League clubs who sent scouts to watch winger Byrne, 23, at the weekend when he netted his 11th goal of the season for eighth tier side Shaw Lane. Ducks boss Craig Elliott said: "I believe Alex is good enough to make the step up to professional football but he signed a permanent deal with us last week and we would like to keep him. Barnsley and others are watching him."

Grimethorpe lad Hancock, who also has 16 goals for Rec, spent time at Oakwell earlier in the season and is due to return for a further trial. Sean Margison, the manager of Athersley said: "Kai scored a hat-trick in a behind-closed-doors game in his first spell at Oakwell. He has been injured since then but Barnsley are keen to get him back and have another look at him.

"He works full-time so he needs to arrange some days off for the trial but he should be back at Oakwell in the next week or two. It's a big thing for him and for our club."
