VOLUNTEERS behind the preservation of a historic site on the outskirts of Barnsley town centre are seeking people’s views on how to plan for the future.

The Barnsley Main Heritage Group has, for the last four years, aimed to make the Grade II-listed site off Oaks Lane a visitor attraction and educational resource.

The group of volunteers has worked with the council and other groups to transform the pithead and surrounding space, developing a pop-up museum and planning interactive resources and trails relaying the history of the site.

They’re now seeking the views of visitors to develop future ideas for projects.

The group said: “Volunteers have worked together over the last few years to preserve and enhance this key heritage site.

“We have seen a significant increase in activity on the site in both organised events and casual users.

“We are in the process of applying for grants to finish off the pop-up information centre and create a family trail.”
