MEN in Barnsley get paid on average £122 more than women per week, latest figures have shown.

The council’s joint strategic needs assessment, which looks at the current and future health and wellbeing needs of people in the town, states men earn an average of £530 but women earn just £408.

The average incomes of men and women in Barnsley, £469 per week, are also below the regional and England averages of £480 and £530 respectively.

Council leader Coun Sir Steve Houghton said while it is against the law to pay women less than men for the same job, women tend to fill certain sectors and men tend to fill other sectors, and the ones men are filling are better paid.
