STEPHANIE Peacock has been continuing her campaign for a fairer pension deal for ex-miners.

The MP for Barnsley East met with the minister of state for business, energy and clean growth Kwasi Kwarteng along with Labour colleague MP for Blaenau Gwent Nick Smith.

Following the government’s commitment to protect the pension bonuses of retired miners, both Stephanie and Nick asked for more detail on when this will happen.

The MPs also discussed the current 50/50 split that sees half of the profits the scheme makes go to the Treasury. This agreement was revealed by the Barnsley East MP through a parliamentary question to have happened without ‘expert actual advise on the arrangement’.

Ms Peacock said: “The miners that went down in dangerous conditions to power our nation deserve nothing less a secure pension arrangement. At the moment, some former miners and their families are struggling to make ends meet. They need more money, now.

“In the coming weeks and months, I will continue to push forward the campaign for a fairer deal for our former miners.”
