BARNSLEY MP Dan Jarvis is calling for more people to speak to their families about becoming organ donors.

There are 27,000 people on the organ donor register in Mr Jarvis's Barnsley Central constituency, but Mr Jarvis said there were still too many people waiting for a transplant.

He said: "This week is organ donation week and I want to support this appeal because there are still too many people who are waiting for an organ transplant. I think it's really important that everyone talks about organ donation with their family and friends.

"There are thousands of potential organ donors here in Barnsley but there still needs to be family agreement for donation to take place even if you are already on the Register. With so many people unsure of their loved one's wishes, hundreds of people across the country are missing out on lifesaving and life-enhancing organ donations.

"I would urge everyone to sit down and have that conversation with their loved ones. It could end up saving someone's life."

Glen Taylor, of Athersley, received a double organ transplant in 2007. He said: "At the time of my transplants I was just weeks away from dying. I feel incredibly lucky to have this second chance. I always try to talk about my experiences and I hope that it inspires people to register as organ donors.

"I fully support this campaign for people to talk about organ donation. I wouldn't be here if somebody hadn't had that conversation."
