A COMMEMORATION marking 100 years since the Barnsley Pals’ colours were laid up in St Mary’s Church in the town centre will be held on Sunday.
People have been invited to go along from 1.30pm and see the new replica flags which have been specially made to show what the originals - which have been laid up in the war memorial chapel in St Mary’s since 1923 and have slowly worn away - would have looked like in all their glory.
The project initially intended to repair the original colours of the two Barnsley Pals battalions, but permission to work on the colours was not granted by the Ministry of Defence, and so project coordinator Jane Ainsworth, with the help of Rev Canon Stephen Race, raised the money needed to make the replicas through grants and donations.
Jane said: “Our short procession will start at 2pm, walking down St Mary’s Gate then Church Street to the cenotaph for remembrance. We will then return to St Mary’s for the service then view an exhibition, partake of refreshments and mingle.
“A ‘Colour Party’ will carry the two replica flags that we commissioned last year and we are delighted to have a variety of groups taking part in the procession, accompanied by Dodworth Colliery Band.”
