MEDALS belonging to a Barnsley Pal have been brought back to Barnsley by a consortium of councillors.

The three First World War medals were awarded to Sgt Richard Herbert Johnson, of the 14th Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment, who was killed in action on July 1, 1916 in the Battle of the Somme.

When they came up for auction, Councillors Joe Hayward and Dave Leech asked 15 councillors if they would help meet the cost. Including commission they paid about £1,000.

Coun Hayward said: "I think it's the first time Barnsley Pals medals have come up on the market. We're so glad they are back in Barnsley and the staff at Experience Barnsley are ecstatic.

"The medals had to come back to Barnsley. Now, they cannot be taken out of Barnsley or sold."
