A SCHOOL in Barnsley is through to the final three of an online competition which could see them win a new playground worth over £10,000.
The Ellis C of E Primary in Hemingfield were put through their paces in an intense application, which saw students and teachers both get involved.
Rachel Hurding, 52, has been the headteacher at the school for the past four years, and hopes that the public will help support them as the only entrant in South Yorkshire.
She said: “Creative Play UK were the company that were advertising the competition online, and we thought that it would be a great idea to get involved.
“We went through a really intense application, we had to send off designs of what we’d like, how they’d get the equipment to us, one of our key worker children even did a vlog to send off.
“We found out that we’d been chosen as one of three finalists, which is fantastic considering there were 2,000 applicants in total.”
The school is attempting to raise the votes by pushing their social media pages as much as they possibly can, and Rachel says the response has been fantastic so far.
The other schools involved are Blackmoor Park Infants School in Liverpool, and Yew Tree Primary School in Walsall, meaning that they are the only school in the region left to vote for.
“We’re the only school in South Yorkshire that are involved in the final, so we’re hoping that people from across the region try and support us,” said Rachel.
“We’ve always heavily promoted the importance of wellbeing here, and once children come back it’ll be so, so important that they’re able to play outside.
“There’s not a school in the country that wouldn’t want this for their students.”
