A STRIKING sculpture which celebrates the role of glass-making in the history of Barnsley has been damaged by yobs.

Having been unveiled on Monk Bretton roundabout at the junction of Burton Road, High Street and Fish Dam Lane in April, the sculpture which is made up of five glass chimneys has been smashed.

It’s thought the incident happened at some point between Thursday evening and Friday morning last week much to a local councillor’s dismay.

Coun Margaret Sheard, who co-ordinated the project, said: “I’m distraught as this sculpture is something to commemorate the role Barnsley, and in particular Monk Bretton, has played in glass-making for more than 400 years.

“I think it happened at some point last Thursday night as it was fine when I drove by earlier on in the day.

“We’re doing everything we can to improve Barnsley and its appearance I can’t believe how destructive some people can be.”

The sculpture, which was paid for by the family of the late Dr Stanley Race, who was a former chairman of glass manufacturer Redfearns, was fastened down but it wasn’t enough to withstand the attack.

Coun Sheard added: “It’s positioned on a very busy roundabout so I’m hoping someone will have seen what happened.

“We’re checking CCTV but we need anyone who has information to get in touch.”
