Barnsley will not call off their match at Walsall on March 23 if they receive a third international call-up.

Adam Davies and Ryan Hedges have both been selected for Wales while the Reds are expecting more call-ups with Ben Williams under consideration by Wales under 21s. Clubs can postpone games if they have three or more players on international duty, like Barnsley’s promotion rivals Sunderland have done.

Coach Dale Tonge said: “There is a likelihood of other players being on international duty but the gaffer (Daniel Stendel) has made it clear that we will play that game no matter what.  It is an opportunity to go further ahead of Sunderland and we don’t want to miss it. We have players who can come into the side and do very well for us.”

Wales are due to play a  friendly against Trinidad and Tobago in Wrexham on Wednesday then a European Championship qualifier against Slovakia in Cardiff the following Sunday. Davies is the Reds captain while Hedges has started just three league games this season.

Tonge said: “Adam has been outstanding all season and he’s a leader within the group and someone the younger boys look to. In every game he seems to do something which gives the team a big lift – be that a save or a catch or just some words. He’s well worth the call-up.  Ryan’s gametime has been limited but they have watched him a lot and he’s made up with the call-up.”
