Remembrance Day events are being held across the borough this morning to remember the country's fallen servicemen and women.

 

In Barnsley town centre, the main civic service will be led by the Mayor Coun Ken Richardson with the traditional parade and commemoration event at 11am, starting with two minutes' silence. The public are asked to be in place by 10.50am.

 

Royal British Legion's Goff Griffiths said in attendance will be members of the Royal British Legion, armed forces veterans, reservists from the Territorial Army and cadets who will all gather at the war memorial outside Barnsley Town Hall. Local dignitaries will also be there, as well as Barnsley Council leader Sir Steve Houghton.

 

Other services, all starting at 11am, include one in Darton at the village's memorial at the side of All Saints' Church; a service in Mapplewell at the war memorial on Blacker Road; in Grimethorpe it will be at the war memorial outside St Luke's Church; a service will be held at Hoyland war memorial at the intersection of West Street and Kirk Balk; Penistone is holding a Remembrance Day parade through the town led by the Penistone branch of the Royal British Legion; Thurnscoe is holding its annual service at 10.50am at the war memorial in the park on High Street.
