Barnsley battled back to earn a 1-1 draw following an entertaining derby against Sheffield Wednesday.

Oliver McBurnie netted on his full debut to respond to Atdhe Nuhiu's penalty.

Caretaker boss Paul Harsley stuck with Nick Townsend in goal and brought in Lloyd Isgrove and McBurnie to the starting eleven.

Wednesday were missing 14 players to injury and suspension and named a youthful bench which included Worsbrough Common youngster Connor Kirby.

David Jones, a midfielder, was used in a central defensive three alongside youngster Jordan Thorniley and Frederico Venancio.

Skipper Andy Yiadom had the first effort on goal but he volleyed over from the edge of the box.

Tom Bradshaw's header from Adam Hammill's cross drew a save out of former Red Joe Wildsmith.

Wednesday forged ahead on 18 minutes when Lucas Joao was found by a brilliant Ross Wallace pass and was tugged back on his way to goal by Yiadom.

Nuhiu stroked home from the spot.

Barnsley needed a swift response and got one with McBurnie bursting into the box and sliding a cracking shot into the bottom corner to level up the scores on 21 minutes.

The striker continued to threaten and he played in Hammill whose back-post cross had to be cleared behind.

The Reds were on top and the lively Isgrove crossed for Bradshaw but his effort was tipped over spectacularly by Wildsmith.

The second half quietened down into a more tactical affair but again Barnsley created the better of the chances.

They were largely from distance with Yiadom firing over and McBurnie drawing another save out of Wildsmith.

Wednesday's defence had to be patched up more in the final ten minutes with Jones going off with a nose injury and being replaced by young defender Frederik Nielsen.

The Owls actually came closer to winning it with Wallace's late effort whistling just wide of the post.
