Barnsley voters backed to leave the European Union.

There was an overwhelming majority in Barnsley with 83,958 leave votes and 38,951 remain votes.

The overall UK result was 51.9 per cent to leave and 48.1 per cent to remain. This means 'Leave' wins the referendum and the UK will quit the European Union. David Cameron has announced he will step down as prime minister by October.There were 122,972 validated ballot papers for Barnsley and the turnout - 69.9 per cent - is the highest since the 1992 general election (75 per cent).

Voting at polling stations got underway yesterday from 7am to 10pm and 175,760 Barnsley residents registered to vote in the historic referendum to decide whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union or leave.

The ballot paper asked: 'Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?'. 

The first ballot papers began to arrive at the Metrodome from about 11pm and stage one of the count was soon underway verifying ballots collected from Barnsley's 151 polling stations. The result came at about 3.45am.
