The Reds are hopeful of announcing Paul Heckingbottom as their permanent head coach in the next few days.

The Royston man has had huge success in his four months as a caretaker, leading the club to the Championship via Sunday's play-off final after also winning at Wembley in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

"Paul knows that we'd like him to take this football club forward on a more permanent basis," chief executive Ben Mansford told the Chronicle.

"But Paul hasn't had any time to breathe in the last few weeks and months so he has gone away for a few days to Wales with his incredibly supportive wife and family. He knows what our offer looks like in black and white, he's seen it.  Now we have a sensible amount of time to get into the details of the contract.  In the next few days I would be really pleased to make an announcement that Paul is our new head coach."

Before he went on holiday, Heckingbottom told the Chronicle that his future position being confirmed was 'just a matter of time'. He added: "I am very flattered that the club want me and I'd love to stay.  I was asking the players to forget their futures until after the last game and that's what I had to do as well.  It would have been wrong of me to tell the players to focus only on promotion then to sort my own situation out.  Now the last game has gone, we can sort it out."

After the play-off final win over Millwall, Barnsley owner Patrick Cryne said: "It's always been the case that he is the boss of Barnsley, we've just never got around to getting the paperwork done.  Paul has always wanted to put the task at hand first and I respect that. "Whenever we've broached the subject he's said 'let's leave it.' If he wants the job, it's his. I hope it gets done quickly. I can imagine other clubs will want him as well but I hope that the Barnsley pull will be strong for him."
