TODAY is the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme.

It is also Winifred Royston’s 100th birthday.

She laughs: “My mother always used to tell me they called the Somme the big push, but that she had had her own big push giving birth to me.”

Winifred still lives in the same home in Winter Avenue, Pogmoor, that she moved into 75 years ago as a new bride with hubbie Hamor.

She acknowledges that times have certainly changed in the 100 years she has lived - she can vividly remember Mr Crossley becoming the first person in Pogmoor to own a car - it was an Austin 7 and caused quite a stir.
