BARNSLEY Council issued the most fixed penalties for dog fouling in England and Wales last year, figures have shown.

The BBC asked 348 councils for their figures and of the 302 that supplied information, Barnsley came out top with 187 fixed penalties for dog fouling.  Almost 50 councils didn't issue any.

Coun Jenny Platts said: “In response to continued requests from local communities and ward councillors over this form of anti-social behaviour, the council’s community safety and enforcement teams brought forward a new approach to tackling dog fouling and littering that is proactive and robust.

“Environmental enforcement officers use a range of techniques including street patrols and the issuing of fixed penalty notices to those animal owners who fail to clear up after their dogs in public areas. This effective approach applies both to the borough’s network of area councils and Barnsley town centre.

“The result is that Barnsley currently outperforms all other local authorities on this type of enforcement activity. The revenue from fines issued also means this innovative and successful approach to tackling dog fouling and littering runs at minimal cost to council tax payers.”
