BARNSLEY Travel Information Centre has closed as cuts to the region's transport budget take hold.

The centre, based inside the interchange, was open to passengers six days a week but is shutting following a ten per cent cut to South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive's budget, announced earlier this year.

One of the biggest casualties of the £7.6 million moneysaving proposals has been travel information centres - with Barnsley, Sheffield, Meadowhall, Doncaster and Rotherham interchanges affected.

However, a SYPTE spokeswoman said customer service ambassadors and a customer service desk will still be available in the interchange to help customers.

Information kiosks in interchanges will be updated, allowing passengers to use them to visit the travelsouthyorkshire.com website to plan their journey, view full timetables and live departures.
