Campaign posters were thrown from the town hall's public gallery to chants of 'disgraceful' and 'disgusting' as councillors approved a controversial application for 150 houses at Low Barugh.
Commercial Estates Projects and Hallam Land Management had its outline proposals to build up to 150 houses on fields behind Dearne Hall Road and Claycliffe Road approved.
The developer says a 'considerable amount' of the land would be used to provide habitat, green areas and open space. Drainage of the site would also be improved to reduce flood risk and create wildlife habitats. As part of the development, a new link road would cut through the new estate to by-pass Dearne Hall Road in an effort to reduce congestion on the mini-roundabout on Claycliffe Road.
The proposals have been met with 'total opposition' from residents who expressed their anger at a planning meeting on Tuesday. About 25 members of the Barugh Residents Against New development protested outside Barnsley town hall ahead of the meeting and handed leaflets to councillors who sit on the planning board as they went in.
Ahead of the meeting, John Hutchinson, one of the BRAND committee members, said: "We feel it is a foregone conclusion. "We are very happy with the level of response from the residents and we have kept things going all along and have got a decent enough turn out here today.
"There is a real strength of feeling in the community about this. It is not that we are anti-development, we recognise the need but this particular site is inappropriate because the infrastructure doesn't support it."
He told members of the planning board: "Local people do not want this development, they have made this very clear."
He spoke about the housing being targeted at families and asked: "Where are these children going to school? Mapplewell? Darton? All these schools are full."
A separate application for 250 houses in Mapplewell / Staincross had been refused earlier in the meeting.
