A ‘DISNEY mad’ beautician has raised more than £1,200 for local causes by making and selling themed face masks every day during lockdown.

Sharon Roddis, of Hunningley Close in Stairfoot, shared the funds raised through donations between the NHS and Barnsley Hospice.

The 48-year-old, who had no previous experience in sewing before lockdown, designed her own Disney-centred face masks and in return asked for donations.

Sharon told the Chronicle: “I have trouble with my nerves, and with lockdown, I found it difficult to be at home.

“I’ve worked all my life and I don’t really have days off so this was completely out of my comfort zone.

“My good friend and colleague Sarah encouraged me to start making face masks for people during the pandemic and to keep my busy.

“I’d never done anything like this before, so learnt from scratch on YouTube. Me and Sarah bond over our love of Disney so they had to be Disney centric.”

Sharon’s designs were posted online where in a matter days, she had hundreds of requests for the masks.

“It spiralled from there really. The first mask I made took five hours, but as things got more popular I was making up to 75 masks a day.

“I didn’t feel comfortable asking for money as I’m not a money-focused, so instead asked for donations.

“People have been incredibly kind to me and my designs, and the fact I’ve been raising money alongside that is wonderful.

“I’ve even had people donating fabrics to help with the designing. In total, we raised £1,200 for the NHS and Barnsley Hospice.

“I’m chuffed to bits with myself. What started as quite a difficult and challenging few months, turned into an overwhelming positive experience.”

The proceeds were donated to the two charities on Wednesday.
