Protesters disrupted a council meeting in the town hall yesterday to demand councillors do more to oppose the so-called 'bedroom tax'.

Members of the Barnsley Campaign Against Bedroom Tax were in the public gallery of the council chamber and as the meeting got underway protesters hung a banner from the balcony saying 'Axe the Bedroom Tax', and lambasted councillors for not putting bedroom tax on the agenda.

They called on councillors to do more and support those unable to pay by pledging there will be no evictions.

Campaign member Dave Gibson told councillors: "It's up to you to do something about it. Someone will be out here and at future meetings until something changes."

The disruption didn't end there. After the meeting, all the councillors were due to have their photograph taken outside the town hall to mark the opening of the Experience Barnsley museum.

But this was sabotaged by two members of the campaign group.

One woman, who would only give her name as Jan, sat in one of the seats put out for councillors holding an 'axe the bedroom tax' banner, delaying the photo being taken.

Jan, a grandmother, was physically removed by a female council worker.

She said she is protesting because she lives in a three-bedroom council house and has to pay an extra £20.37 a week in 'bedroom tax'.

She said she needs the three-bedroom house because she has six grandchildren who stay with her when their parents are working.
