A dementia charity received the keys to new premises on Friday which it plans to turn into a centre to help the town's 3,000 sufferers.

Barnsley Independent Alzheimer's and Dementia Support has raised £36,000 through the Buy A Brick campaign and have leased Joseph Exley House on Dodworth Road.

Chief officer Linda Pattison said: "We've signed a lease and are hoping to get the keys today. It's been a long, drawn out process getting a lease but hopefully everything will go to plan. We're hoping to have moved in a couple of weeks."

The charity has raised £36,000 of its £45,000 total, which Linda said is enough to be able to move in and get up and running.

At the moment, BIADS is being forced to split its services between two sites, at Barnsley Community Build on Sheffield Road and Sheffield Road Baptist Church on the edge of the town centre.

That situation has not been ideal and Linda said moving into Joseph Exley House would make a great difference to the services, activities and support the charity will be able to offer to dementia sufferers and their carers.

Linda, who won for exceptional achievement at last year's Proud of Barnsley awards, said the centre would mean people would mean patients and carers would be able to drop in whenever they wanted help or advice or someone to talk to.
