VOLUNTEERS are asking for donations to be made so that a pop-up museum can be installed in the old Barnsley Main colliery.

The Barnsley Main Heritage Group are a set of volunteers who came together in 2016, with the help of Barnsley Council and Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership to conserve the Barnsley Main Colliery site.

So far they have spent thousands of hours clearing back growth around the area, carrying out surveys and have installed a gate on the site.

They are now currently looking to raise around £4,000 so that they can set up a museum with the aim of helping people understand the history of the coal mining heritage in Barnsley and what role the colliery played.

The volunteers have set up a Crowdfunding page which is set to end on October 2, and if enough money has been raised then work will begin immediately with the hope for the museum to be open around March next year.

All of the money raised will go towards installing flooring, walls and lighting in the site as well as showcasing its history and Barnsley’s rich mining heritage.
