SHOPPERS will notice some big changes around the town centre in the new year as plans press ahead for the refurbishment of the Metropolitan Centre.

From January shop units fronting onto Cheapside and May Day Green - including WH Smith and Game - will close and hoarding erected to allow work to begin on the new meat and fish market and retail units as part of the Better Barnsley regeneration.

In the first stage of works, only the area for the new meat and fish market will be affected. In February, the open markets stalls next to this block will then have to be relocated to allow the hoarding to be put up from the upper market hall steps on Cheapside and around the side of the building towards May Day Green.
