Barnsley bagged a vital three points in their bid to beat the drop by seeing off relegation rivals Birmingham City 2-0.

Oliver McBurnie netted a first half brace and also had a penalty saved as Barnsley sealed a double over their hosts.

The win lifted Barnsley above Birmingham and out of the relegation places with their first win since New Year's Day.

Jose Morais picked an attacking line-up for his first away game in charge.

Mamadou Thiam and Kieffer Moore both started in two of the five changes.

Zeki Fryers and Adam Jackson also returned to the team following lengthy injuries.

Brad Potts also started with January signing Christoph Knasmullner on the bench for the first time.

Brothers Gary Gardner and Craig Gardner lined up against one another in midfield and former Barnsley captain Marc Roberts also started for the hosts.

Barnsley started well and went in front after 12 minutes after Thiam found McBurnie with a right wing cross and the striker angled an effort beyond David Stockdale.

They had a great chance to make it two six minutes later after McBurnie had been fouled in the box by Roberts.

McBurnie stepped up to the spot but was denied by a terrific diving save from Stockdale.

He was not to be denied a second, though, and got it on 36 minutes from almost on the line after Moore's initial header had been kept out by Stockdale.

Birmingham started the second half better but still failed to create a real opening.

Townsend had to divert a dangerous Carl Jenkinson cross away from goal.

Barnsley looked to increase their advantage and came close to with Moore flicking Connor Mahoney's corner wide of the far post.

Knasmullner replaced McBurnie for the final stages of the game and added another body into Barnsley's midfield.

Birmingham continued to press for a goal but were restricted to shots from distance with both Jota and Jacques Maghoma firing well wide of target.

Barnsley continued to defend well and saw out three minutes of added on time.

As it happened:

13:31pm: Welcome to today’s coverage of Barnsley’s trip to Birmingham City.

13:32pm: It’s another important outing for the Reds, who failed to pick up valuable points against fellow relegation rival Burton Albion on Tuesday.

13:32pm: Barnsley won the other meeting between the two clubs at Oakwell back in November thanks to goals from Tom Bradshaw and Zeki Fryers.

13:35pm: It’s Jose Morais’s second game in charge and he is expected to be without Matt Mills. Zeki Fryers and Ethan Pinnock are also injury doubts.

13:37pm: It’s an interesting day for Barnsley’s ‘keeper Nick Townsend. He returns to his former club after playing four consecutive games for the Reds under four different managers.

13:38pm: Brothers Gary Gardner and Craig Gardner could also line up against one another in midfield.

13:40pm: There are interviews with Marc Roberts, the former Barnsley skipper, now at Birmingham and club hero Geoff Horsfield, from Athersley, in today's programme. Roberts said it was 'inevitable' former boss Paul Heckingbottom would move on.

13:44pm: Team news is coming up at 2pm.

14:01pm: Barnsley: Townsend, Yiadom, Jackson, Lindsay, Fryers, Potts, Gardner, Williams, Thiam, Moore, McBurnie.

14:02pm: Zeki Fryers and Adam Jackson return to the starting line-up after injury lay-offs. Mamadou Thiam also starts with Kieffer Moore and Oliver McBurnie up front. Looks an attacking team.

14:05pm: Barnsley subs: Davies, Cavare, Pearson, Mahoney, Moncur, Knasmullner, Bradshaw.

14:16pm: Barnsley could really do with ending their seven game winless run and Birmingham seems a good place to do it. Like Sunderland, below Barnsley in the table, they have been beaten already by the Reds this season.

14:19pm: Interesting to see Knasmullner on the bench for the first time. Hammill not in the squad. Lack of genuine wingers suggests Barnsley are going to be more direct today.

14:22pm: Birmingham were thrashed 5-0 midweek against Brentford in what was their third successive defeat. Must be a lack of confidence Barnsley can exploit today.

14:23pm: Birmingham are also the lowest scorers in the entire football league with just 22 from 33 games.

14:40pm: It's actually a mild day in Birmingham with the sun shining. Both sets of players are now going through their warm-ups.

14:57pm: The teams are out. Barnsley are once again captained by Andy Yiadom. Harlee Dean is Birmingham's skipper and Jeremy Simpson (Lancashire) is the referee.

15:10pm: 9 - Barnsley have their first effort. Fryers, who scored in the reverse fixtures, takes aim from 25 yards but it flies over the bar.

15:12pm: 10 - Huge chance for Birmingham. Townsend denies Boga and then another effort from close-range in a matter of seconds. Looked a certain goal.

15:13pm: 12 - Barnsley 1, Birmingham 0. McBurnie turns in.

15:15pm: 12 - It was great work by Thiam down the right. His cross found McBurnie who angled a shot past Stockdale into the bottom corner. Great start.

15:17pm: 16 - Great chance for two. Moore's shot is blocked in the box and McBurnie's effort is then saved.

15:18pm: 17 - Barnsley will have a chance to make it two. Foul on McBurnie by Roberts and Barnsley are awarded a penalty.

15:43pm: 42 - Gary Gardner's curling effort lands on the top of the net. Very good effort.

15:46pm: 45 - Three minutes are added on.

15:47pm: 45+1 - Brave tackle from Jackson denies Birmingham a chance.

15:48pm: 45+2 - Birmingham have a goal ruled out for offside.

15:50pm: Half time. Birmingham 0, Barnsley 2. Home side are booed off. Barnsley will be very happy with the first half despite McBurnie's penalty being saved.

16:03pm: The home fans are definitely restless. One confronted Steve Cotterill on the pitch at 1-0. Plenty grumbling during the break as they head towards a fourth straight loss.

16:05pm: Attendance: 19, 822. (1,240 from Barnsley).

16:26pm: 66 - Birmingham substitute. Ndoye is replaced by Jota.

16:30pm: 70 - Barnsley are defending well so far this half. Moore buys them a breather after being fouled upfield.

16:34pm: 74 - Dean goes into the book after flying into Potts.

16:35pm: 75 - Moore is fouled by Maghoma. Free-kick in a good position for Barnsley.

16:36pm: 76 - Knasmullner is coming on for his Barnsley debut. McBurnie goes off.

16:37pm: 77 - Mahoney gets hold of a loose ball but drags an effort wide.

16:41pm: 81 - Jota fires well over.
