WORK paused on a building site yesterday when an old military shell was unearthed - but developers had already been warned that could be a possibilty according to an ex-councillor.

Police and a bomb disposal team were called out to Lairds Way in Springvale when workers on the site, clearing it as part of a planned housing development, discovered the hidden munition.

Ex-Coun John Wade was driving past the site yesterday morning when he spotted the workmen lined up at the side of the road.

He believes the ordnance could date back to the site’s time as a branch for Sheffield firm Thomas Ward, who used the location to strip the copper bands from tank and cannon shells.
