Daniel Stendel was ‘very proud’ of his Barnsley players after their 4-0 win at second-placed Peterborough United on Saturday.

The Reds head coach asked for a reaction after the 1-1 draw with bottom club Plymouth Argyle at Oakwell four days earlier.

Stendel said: “It was a very good performance. I am very proud. All the players gave all of their best. We spoke after the Plymouth game and I told them that they needed a better attitude because we have the talent and the ability. I am very proud of them all but a little bit more of Ben Williams who played so well in his first match.”

Williams made his senior debut in league football aged 19. The left-back said: “Coming here and winning 4-0 has proved a point to the other teams in the league that we are pushing in the right direction and we are going for promotion. Personally, I couldn’t have asked for a better day.”

Stendel was also pleased for the 1,572 away supporters who were loud through the match. He said: “It was a good result for our crazy fans. The atmopshere was like a home game.”

Midfielder Brad Potts added: “The fans were like a 12th man, they never stopped singing from start to finish. It spurs the lads on even more when they can hear the fans. We want to send them home happy and we did that.

“To get three points was important and the way we did it made it even sweeter. We got 2-0 up in the first half and once we got the third the game was done. We had a lot of the ball but we do dominate most games with the ball.”

Potts scored the second and third goal on his return to the starting line-up after injury. Stendel said: “We saw how important he is. He was very good at our transitions into offence, he played good passes and he is good at finishing. He shows it in training every day and it was important that he did it in a game.”
