A BRASS band brought joy and plenty of tears to Barnsley Hospital where a family was preparing to say goodbye to Pat Coupland.

Pat, 73, had been given just 24 to 48 hours to live last Friday night when her beloved Dodworth Colliery Band struck up to play her favourite hymn tunes outside her hospital room window.

Despite being in the very late stages of dementia, the former church organist seemed to respond to the music. Pat died early on Thursday morning.

Her family said they had been given comfort that she had managed to enjoy some of her favourite music in a moving, memorable and personal performance - which ended up being shared all over the world.
